Robert Black, C'89, is entering his second season as Head
Football Coach for Sewanee and his 19th season overall. Coach
Black's experiences both with football and Sewanee go back a long
time. He lettered in varsity football and baseball from 1985-86
through 1988-89 and was named Sewanee's Athlete of the Year in
1989. After earning his B.A. in English from The University, this
Nashville native went on to coach on the Mountain as the Tiger
Defensive Coordinator and Head Baseball Coach from 1990-1996.
Robert and his family moved to Texas in the summer of 1996, where
he served as Athletic Director, Head Football Coach, and Head
Baseball Coach for TMI Episcopal School in San Antonio. He also did
graduate work at The University of Texas-San Antonio during this
time.
Black moved back to his hometown, Nashville, in 2002 to Montgomery
Bell Academy, his alma mater, where he has added valuable
administrative experience as Director of Admission to his already
impressive background. Black has also been an assistant football
coach and an English teacher while at MBA. While coaching football
at MBA, Black helped guide The Big Red to two state
championships.
Robert and his wife, Kelley, have a son, Aubrey (8), and a
daughter, Jenna (5). Kelley is a member of the Sewanee Athletics
Hall of Fame as a member of the 1990 Women's Tennis Team.
Kelley teaches at St. Andrew's-Sewanee and serves as the Head
Tennis Coach.
