Field Hockey Recap (Week 10) - DePauw Clinches Top Spot for the SCAC Championships

SUWANEE, Ga. - Despite losing their final match of the season, DePauw University claimed the number one seed heading into the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championships hosted by Centre College in Danville, Ky. this weekend. In the history of the SCAC Field Hockey Championships, the number one seed has gone on to win the tournament two times in the four year stint.

Centre dropped two matches last week against Transylvania University and Sewanee-University of the South. A disappointing week overall, the Colonels did find some fight in themselves late in both matches. In both matches, the Colonels won the statistical battle but lacked the sense of urgency and determination needed for a full match against their opponents. There were some bright spots however. Senior Alison Pierce continued her steady play throughout the week as did junior Rachel Watkins, sophomores Sarah Humphries and Cynthia Morse, and freshman back Jennifer Bohnert. Seniors Emily Boyle, Beth Faulkner, Teresa Johnstone, and Sarah Scheer, juniors Mary Kate Clodius, Sally Faulkner, and Victoria Richardson, and freshmen Patty Cowley and Katy Meyer had moments of brilliance but will need to re-double their efforts heading into the SCAC tournament this weekend if the Colonels hope to walk away with their second SCAC Championship.

DePauw opened the weekend with a 4-0 win over Transylvania as Sarah Riffle scored twice with Carolyn Mueller and Beth Seegers each adding one. Liz Attewell recorded nine saves in posting her fifth shutout of the season. On Sunday, Sewanee took a 2-0 lead in the second half before Riffle tallied the Tigers' lone score with less than three minutes remaining. The loss snapped DePauw's eight-game win streak. DePauw's 13 wins this season are the most since the 2000 team won 15.

Hendrix sophomore forward Abby Coleman scored the Warriors’ lone goal in the 51st minute of action as the team lost 4-1 to SCAC foe Rhodes College in their final regular season affair on Saturday at Warrior Field. Hendrix’s ends 2008 with a 4-10 overall record and 1-7 SCAC mark. Rhodes struck early with its first goal coming in the fifth minute and second coming in the 19th. The Lynx took a 2-0 lead into the break before putting the ball past the keeper in the 39th minute of action. Coleman then answered with her team-high seventh goal of the season, making it 3-1. Rhodes would put the game out of reach with two minutes left in regulation.

Rhodes split on the weekend with a SCAC win over Hendrix 4-1 on Saturday and a 2-1 loss at Lindenwood on Sunday. Goals were scored Hillary Relyea, Charlie Wagner, Sarah Kennedy, and Lindsey Gurkovich. Wagner and Guckovich also picked up assists as did Libby Feaster. The Lynx dominated play outshooting the Warriors 18-8 and holding an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. Rhodes played a physical and talented Lindenwood team tough but was unable to come up with the win. The Lynx lone goal was scored by Libby Feaster early in the second half. The Lynx will be the #3 seed at the upcoming SCAC Tournament and take on #2 Centre in the semifinal on Saturday 11/8 at 2:30 pm.

Sewanee made a powerful home stand this weekend, beating Centre 2-1 in overtime on Saturday and then topping DePauw on Sunday for senior day. Lynn Hancock scored a goal on Sunday, taking her season total to 15, just one away from the Sewanee all-time season record. She also leads the league in goals scored. Clarkie Crawford had 12 saves on Sunday and also leads the SCAC. Sewanee is now 11-6 and 4-4 in the league. It has won its last five contests. The Tigers will compete at the SCAC Tournament next weekend.
