Field Hockey Recap (Week 8) - DePauw Continues to Roll, Four Straight Wins and Counting


SUWANEE, Ga. - DePauw University continued to roll this past week and have now extended their win streak to four straight with shutout wins against St. Vincent and Wooster respectively. The Tigers are currently riding their longest win streak since 2007 when DePauw won six in a row.

Centre did not play this past week. The Colonels will return to action this weekend as they will hit the road for two conference tilts against Rhodes and Hendrix respectively.

DePauw extended its win streak to four straight with a couple of shutout wins. The Tigers blanked Saint Vincent and Wooster by identical 3-0 scores. In the Saint Vincent win, Meredith Ellis scored on a Kimberly Trainor assist at 13:25 before Carolyn Mueller made it 2-0 with just 8:30 remaining in the contest on Sarah Riffle's assist. Katie Sowar scored, unassisted, at 84:13 to round out the scoring. DePauw outshot Saint Vincent 23-2 and held a 15-1 edge in corners. Liz Attewell recorded one save in posting her second straight shutout. Riffle got the scoring started against Wooster just 3:45 into the second half before adding a second score at 57:12. Sowar rounded out the scoring at 62:53. DePauw outshot Wooster 18-5 and held a 7-3 edge in corners. The Tigers' Attewell recorded three saves in notching her third shutout.

Hendrix sophomore forward Savannah Saunders led the Warriors with two goals and an assist in their 4-0 victory over Fontbonne University Saturday morning at Nerinx Hall H.S in St. Louis, Mo. Hendrix dropped a 3-1 affair at Lindenwood University on Friday night. The Warriors improve to 4-7 overall and remain at 1-4 in SCAC competition. On Saturday, Saunders scored Hendrix’s first goal of the game in the 11th minute off a rebound. Sophomore forward Katie Schaiff put the ball past the keeper off a penalty corner from sophomore midfielder Abby Coleman in the 18th minute. Coleman then found the back of the net with her team-high sixth score of 2008 off a penalty corner from Saunders during the 65th minute. Saunders scored her third goal of the year on a breakaway opportunity from first year forward Emily Bell with just 0:58 remaining in regulation. Lindenwood managed to put three balls in the net before Hendrix sophomore defender Heather Newell (Aurora, Colo.) scored her first goal of the season in the 49th minute of play.

Rhodes dropped its only game this past week falling to Kean 3-0 on Sunday. The Lynx who have now dropped three straight games for the first time since the final three games of last season will return to action Tuesday afternoon against Ursinus (Pa.) College.

After falling 3-0 to Lynchburg on Thursday, Sewanee rallied, earning shutouts over Sweet Briar and Washington and Lee over the weekend. Seniors Lynn Hancock and Claiborne Buckingham had a monopoly on the Tiger scoring, with each one scoring three goals on the weekend. Senior goalie Clarkie Crawford earned both shutouts for Sewanee in goal - the first two of her career. Jen Baldaccini's Tigers are now 8-6 on the day and will host Fontbonne next Friday for Homecoming on the Mountain. The Tigers will return to SCAC conference play as they host Centre and DePauw on November 1-2.
