LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The 2016-17 SCAC men's basketball season tipped off on Tuesday with the league posting a cumulative 10-12 mark in the opening week of action.
Two-time defending SCAC tournament champion Texas Lutheran University posted a 3-0 mark, defeating three American Southwest Conference opponents. The Bulldogs opened with an 87-84 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor University on Tuesday and followed that up with victories over McMurry University, 80-72, and Hardin-Simmons University, 90-66, on Thursday and Saturday.
Another successful start to the 2016-17 campaign came from Centenary College, who rebounded from a 90-77 loss to East Texas Baptist University on opening night to take two games from Southern Athletic Association opponents over the weekend. The Gents posted a 79-76 victory Hendrix College on Saturday when Travion Kirkendoll nailed a 35-foot buzzer beater and then cruised to a 76-60 win at Millsaps College a day later.
Trinity University also got off to a 2-1 start. The Tigers defeated UT-Dallas, 75-56, on Tuesday and then split two games at the Case Western Reserve University/Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Tournament. Trinity lost a 72-71 decision to the host school on Friday but bounced back with an 84-70 victory against Hampden-Sydney College in the consolation game.
