Oglethorpe Wins 2011 SCAC Men's Soccer Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Second seeded Oglethorpe University scored an early first half goal and made it stand to earn the program's first-ever men's soccer championship, holding on to defeat fifth-seeded Centre College, 1-0, at the 2011 SCAC Tournament Sunday afternoon on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College. On an assist from first-year forward Jakub Madej, sophomore midfielder Sean King found the back of the net at the 18:17 mark of the first half to give the Petrels a lead they would not relinquish.

With the victory, Oglethorpe (17-3-0) earns the SCAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, which will be the school's first-ever appearance in the event. Tournament brackets will be announced Monday morning.

Oglethorpe out-shot Centre 16-5 and had five corners to the Colonels' one.

Junior goalkeeper Frank Petersen had a clean sheet for the second-consecutive day, making four saves for the Petrels.

Centre, playing in its third match in three days, ends the season with a 13-6-2 mark.

After the game, SCAC Director of Communications Russell Kramer caught up with both head coaches along with Oglethorpe senior Aaron Walker and Mark Lavery as well as sophomore Sean King.
