SUWANEE, Ga. – In exclusive 2009 all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) voting by the league’s head coaches, Rachel Gill of DePauw University was selected the conference’s Offensive Player-of-the-Year for the second time in three years and Megan Soultz of DePauw University was tabbed as Pitcher-of-the-Year for the second straight year. In that same balloting, Southwestern University head coach Angela Froboese was voted SCAC Coach-of-the-Year in her first year as head coach of the Pirates.
Gill, a senior catcher from St. Louis, Mo., is a three time
All-SCAC first team performer and a two time SCAC POTY, winning the
honor in 2007 as a sophomore. Gill finished the season with a .395
batting average (11th in the SCAC) and also slugged .479 with an
on-base percentage of .438. Behind the plate at catcher Gill posted
a 1.000 fielding percentage on the year as well. A three time
All-SCAC Tournament Team selection, Gill was named All-American
after her sophomore year in 2007. A senior leader Gill had 32 RBIs
(Ninth in the SCAC), while scoring 29 runs of her own. Gill also
became the leagues all-time hits leader earlier in the year and
finished her career with 214 career hits. Gill also set the league
record for most doubles in a career with 47 total. Gill was
recently named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III
All-Region Third Team for the Central Region.
In terms of sheer statistical dominance, Soultz produced yet again
one the most prolific seasons in the history of the SCAC. A junior
right-hander from Carmel, Ind., Soultz led the league in innings
pitched (230.0), appearances (38), strikeouts (164), complete games
(32) and wins (28 – tied 2nd most in Division III). In her
first three seasons in the league, Soultz has already set the SCAC
career wins mark at 83 and is first all-time in strikeouts with
582. Soultz also posted an ERA of 1.40 (Fourth in the SCAC) and
held opponents to batting just .203 against her (Third in the
SCAC). A third team all-America selection in 2007, Soultz was also
named to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-America
First Team – one of just two pitchers to earn the honor.
Recently Soultz was just named to 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA
Division III All-Region First Team for the Central Region as well
as being named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic
All-District Second Team.
Southwestern University, in its inaugural softball season, was led
by head coach Angela Froboese who guided the Pirates to a 9-3
record in the conference and a first place finish in the Western
Division. The Pirates posted an overall record of 19-16 including
advancing to the third round of the conference championship before
falling to Rhodes 2-0.
