Austin College dropped a pair
of games to Northwood University in their lone doubleheader of the
week, falling 11-3 in game one and 10-4 in game two. In game two,
Stefanie Faith's three run homer gave the Roos an early 3-0 lead
but AC was unable to maintain that lead as Northwood pulled away
for the six run victory. This week the Roos play UT-Tyler on
Wednesday and then head to the University of Dallas tournament this
weekend.
Birmingham Southern went 2-2 this week at home, dropping
a doubleheader to Huntingdon on Friday but bouncing back to defeat
both Berry College and Millsaps College on Sunday. Both of the
Panthers’ wins were as a result of game-ending runs scored in
the bottom of the seventh; sophomore Chelsea Fernandez recorded the
game-winner against Berry, and junior Ashley Bice did the same
against Millsaps. Juniors Ronni Ferris and Beth Lefler split
pitching duties for BSC, each going 1-1 this week. Ferris led the
way with six strikeouts against Huntingdon and 10 against Berry.
The Panthers are away from home for their next three dates,
beginning with a doubleheader at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga.,
this Saturday.
Centre opened the season with two wins over Defiance
College in a double header on Friday, March 4 at home. Centre won
5-0 in the first game using a four run fifth inning to secure the
win. In the Colonels second game of the inning they used a home run
in the seventh inning to come from behind to win 3-2. Centre was
supposed to compete against Hanover College on Sunday, March 6, but
the game was cancelled due to inclement weather. Centre will be
hosting the March Mayhem Tournament on Saturday March 12 and
Sunday, March 13, where they will be facing Manchester,
Rose-Hulman, and Oberlin.
#7 DePauw was scheduled to play in the Maryville (Tenn.)
Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, but the tournament was
canceled. The Tigers then scheduled a doubleheader against
Maryville but it was canceled due to unplayable field conditions.
DePauw now opens the season on Saturday, March 12, at
Webster.
Hendrix scored 51 runs and went 3-1 over the weekend as
host of the 2011 Warrior Spring Fling. Hendrix cruised to a
pair of mercy-rule wins over MacMurray College and University of
Dallas on Saturday, before splitting two games against No. 19
Washington University on Sunday. The Warriors now stand at
5-5 overall. The Hendrix offense unleashed 42 runs on 36
hits, while the defense allowed just one earned run (two total) on
the first day of the 2011 Warrior Spring Fling. Hendrix picked up a
23-0 win over MacMurray in the first game of the day. Sophomore
Ashley Halbert pitched a two-hit shutout for her second win of the
year. The Warriors then cruised to a 19-2 victory over the
Crusaders in a cold and windy game under the lights. Herrera
improved to 2-1 after eight strikeouts, just one walk and four hits
in the complete game performance. Hendrix junior Trace Grinnell set
the tone by hitting the first pitch the Warriors saw on Sunday over
the center field fence, as Hendrix earned a 3-1 win over No. 19
Washington in the opener and then dropped a 7-6 nail biter in extra
innings to close out the weekend. Hendrix and Washington took home
Co-Championship honors after the 2011 Warrior Spring Fling was all
said and done. Halbert scattered six hits over 7.0 innings for her
third win of the season. She allowed just one free pass and struck
out two batters. Herrera battled through 8.0 innings and fanned
seven batters in the final game. She allowed five earned runs, just
three walks and 10 hits in her second loss of the season. Herrera
struck out three separate Bears two-times apiece. Herrera also
finished the weekend at the plate 10-of-15 including three doubles,
a homer, seven runs scored and nine RBI. She posted a .667 batting
average and 1.067 slugging percentage. Sophomore Alyssa Barry went
9-for-14 with five runs scored, four doubles, a triple and three
RBI. Grinnell finished 6-for-11 with a team-high eight runs
scored.
Millsaps split their games this weekend at the Panther
Spring Classic, hosted by Birmingham-Southern. The Majors (2-9,
0-1) defeated Alabama A&M in the third game of the classic 10-7
thanks to an eight-run fifth inning. With the Bulldogs leading 3-1
after four, the Majors looked like they were going to go quietly in
the fifth. Jade Hewitt grounded out in the leadoff spot, Caroline
Thompson flied out to right in the three hole and Allyson Christian
stuck out swinging at a ball in the dirt. That should have left
Emily Spicer stranded on first with no runs scored, but the third
strike got past the A&M catcher and Christian made it to first
on the wild pitch to keep the inning alive. Allison Tarbox singled
to left to load the bases for Katie Birdwell. The freshman out of
Bridge City, Texas sent the ball sailing into the woods past the
fence for a grand slam to give the Majors the 5-3 advantage, but
the Majors weren't done yet. Catherine Henry drove in Sam
Wursteisen with a single to right, Jade Hewitt came back around and
singled to plate Henry, and Spicer shot a double to left that
scored Hewitt and Lindsey Drane. By the end of the inning,
the Majors had scored eight runs, with two outs. In the final game
of the day between BSC and Millsaps, both teams went scoreless
until the bottom of the seventh when, with bases loaded, the
Panthers' Ashley Bice recorded the game-winning and game-ending RBI
to plate senior Melissa Revis. The Majors left six stranded in the
game. Millsaps will return to Jackson this week for a couple of
non-conference series. The first will see the Majors square off
with the Mississippi College Choctaws on Wednesday for a double
header at Freedom Ridge Park beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Rhodes played only 2 games this weekend due to inclement
weather, splitting a doubleheader with #21 Piedmont. In game
1, Rhodes pounded out 15 hits and put 9 runners across the plate,
en route to a 9-2 win over the Lions. The game included home
runs by Sara Bowen and Liv Ryan. Bowen, Kelli Zomer and
Courtney Williams each had 3 hits to pace the Lynx offense, while
Ryan accounted for 4 RBI. Sara Bowen picked up her 3rd win of
the season, giving up just 3 hits and no earned runs, while
striking out 5. After falling behind 4-0 after 1 inning,
Rhodes battled back in game 2 to take a 5-4 lead after 4
innings. The Lions answered with 4 runs in the next 2
innings, and Rhodes’ comeback effort fell a run short, as the
Lynx dropped game 2 by a score of 8-7. Ryan hit her second
home run of the day in the game, and senior shortstop Allison Conn
was 4 for 4 with a home run and 5 RBI. Rhodes will play
MacMurray on Tuesday, Millikin on Friday, then host the
CiCi’s Pizza Classic this weekend with games against Eureka,
Westminster and Greenville.
Sewanee picked up a pair of wins over host Fisk
University on Thursday, winning 7-0 and 7-0 in a doubleheader in
which had to forfeit. The Tigers scheduled doubleheaders for
Saturday and Monday, against Talladega College and Judson College,
respectively, have been postponed due to inclement weather. Next up
for the Tigers is a doubleheader against Judson March 23rd in
Sewanee.
Southwestern had a light week of games this week, facing
Our Lady of the Lake for a double-header on Tuesday afternoon. The
Pirates used a consistent offensive presence and strong pitching on
the mound to win their second consecutive sweep at home with a 7-3,
4-0 win over OLLU. The win improves Southwestern to 8-6 on the
year. They return to action this weekend as they head to take on
some of the nation's top teams at the Tuscan
Invitational.
Trinity did not play last week, but will play four times
during the upcoming week. The Tigers will play Evangel University
and York (NE) College on Wednesday, followed by a road trip to
Texas Lutheran University on Thursday afternoon. Trinity split a
home doubleheader with Texas Lutheran earlier this season, losing
3-2 before rebounding with an impressive 8-0 win in five
innings.
