Austin College got off to a
strong start to open the year, blanking LeTourneau 4-0 on Friday
before adding a 3-1 win over North Park University on Sunday. The
‘Roos out-shot their two opponents 48-19 and got goals from
six different players. Against the Lady Jackets, the ‘Roos
went into the half in a scoreless tie but a 19-1 second half shot
advantage helped them explode for four second half goals. Shelley
Casey got things started just 32 seconds into the half on a feed
from Gabby Mavelian, and Ali Ryan and Ashleigh Johnson followed up
with goals in the 64th and 82nd minutes, respectively. Emily Brzuzy
capped off the scoring on a pass from Mackenzie Lund at the 84:40
mark as Kaitlin Elledge recorded the shutout. Against North Park
the team once again broke a scoreless tie early in the second half
when Kelsey D’Amore’s corner kick found its way into
the net in the 48th minute, and Ali Ryan punched home a rebound off
of Andrea Schneider’s shot 10 minutes later to put AC up 2-0.
North Park countered with a goal of their own but Maddy Millender
scored her first career goal off an assist from Ali Fidel to put
the game away at 3-1. This weekend the ’Roos host the SCAC
vs. ASC tournament and will take on East Texas Baptist on Saturday
at 1:00 p.m.
Birmingham-Southern got the season off to a
2-1 start this week, all on the road, shutting out Huntingdon and
Greensboro College before dropping a tough match in overtime to
Maryville College. Freshman goalkeeper Richelle Byrd played every
minute of all three matches in the net, making 15 saves with an
.882 save percentage and two shutouts. Junior Sara Menton led with
two goals over the three games, while junior Devon Weldon led with
10 shots.

their opening showcase event. Wednesday night, Centre defeated

goals in the Rose-Hulman win, while Dana Sprague and Alexandra Ehr
added single scores.
Hendrix was pinned with a 4-1 setback against
Lyon College on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field. The Scotts
immediately controlled the tempo and out-shot the Warriors 23-4 to
hand Hendrix its season-opening loss. Lyon lit up the
scoreboard in the 22nd minute on a score by senior forward Katie
Marshall. The Scotts then jumped out to a 3-0 advantage on
back-to-back goals from junior forward Anja Klotzle in the 48th and
62nd minute. Marshall added two points to her day with
assists on each of Klotzle's scores. Lyon made it a 4-0
contest in the 80th minute when sophomore forward Linda Miloud put
it past the keeper off an assist from junior midfielder Koryn
Najera. Hendrix finally reached the scoreboard on a rebound
when junior forward Tristan Stolz sent the ball over the keeper's
reach for her second career goal, off a pass from senior forward

their home opener and two games in Texas over the weekend. First up
the women hosted Louisiana College and cruised to a 6-0 win over
the Lady Wildcats. They then headed over to East Texas Baptist on
Friday, winning 2-1, and LeTourneau, taking Sunday’s match

scoring three goals with one assist in the three games. She had
both game winners in Texas, including both of Millsaps’ goals
against LeTourneau. The Majors will return to the pitch this
Friday as they host the Division I Alcorn State Braves for a 6:00

Oglethorpe got their season started in style
by notching two wins over Agnes Scott and Trececca Nazarene. The

of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 2-0 on Sunday.
Senior Fritsl Butler turned in an impressive all-around
performance on Friday, as the
Sewanee women’s soccer team opened the
season with a 1-0 victory over Berry College. Butler, and fellow
senior Kate Willingham, anchored a Sewanee attack that refused to
budge in a physical battle with the Vikings. Butler finally broke
through in the 57th minute, scoring Sewanee’s lone goal,
which proved to be all they needed on the night. Layne Ezzell
provided the assist on Butler’s goal and the Tigers move on
to face Lee University (Tenn.) on Wednesday in
Sewanee.
Southwestern is hard at work and starting off
with an offensive mind frame. In their first two games the Pirates
have scored eight goals and held teams to three. They opened the
season at Mary Hardin-Baylor and started slowly in the first half,
recording one goal, but then turned up the pressure and put two
more in the back of the net to win 3-2. The same tone was set on
Monday night’s home opener against Texas Lutheran as SU
scored one goal in the first half and four in the second half,
winning 5-1. The Pirates return to the road this coming weekend to
face some of the top teams in the American Southwest Conference.
They take on UT Tyler on Friday at 2:00 and UT Dallas on Sunday at
1:00.
No. 5 Trinity opened up the 2010 season with
a win over Texas Lutheran on Wednesday, then faltered in a 4-0
defeat at Hardin-Simmons on Saturday afternoon. Trinity beat
Hardin-Simmons twice last season – once during the NCAA
Playoffs – but could not manage any scoring in
Saturday’s loss. Wednesday’s win over Texas
Lutheran saw three different players score goals, with Kelly Watts
scoring a goal and an assist to lead the team. Tuesday’s game
win Mary Hardin-Baylor, scheduled to be the home opener for the
Tigers, was postponed until next month. Trinity will next
play this weekend at UT-Dallas and UT-Tyler. Last season, the
Tigers defeated both teams by the score of 4-0 in San
Antonio.
