LILY MCWHORTER OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior middle blocker from The Woodlands, Texas, has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Tuesday, September 3 through Sunday, September 8. SCAC Volleyball Release (Week 2)

McWhorter was a force to be reckoned with all week for opposing offenses as she tallied 16 total blocks in twelve sets played, averaging 1.33 blocks per set. She was part of a Pirates' defensive effort that held their four opponents to a combined .092 hitting percentage on the weeked.

In the middle of the court, McWhorter also contributed offensively, posting thirty kills over the team's 4-0 week, hitting at .456 while averaging 2.5 kills a set. 

Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
Senior libero/defensive specialist Faith Coldewey of Texas Lutheran led the Bulldogs with a team-leading 60 digs (5.00 per set) and earned Southwestern Invitational All-Tournament honors as the Bulldogs went 3-0 at the event. Coldewey also had a career-high six aces against Illinois Tech. Senior defensive specialist/libero Kara Spice of St. Thomas had 77 digs (5.13 per set) and added 15 assists to help the Celts to a 3-1 mark at the East Texas Baptist Invitational. Sophomore libero Laynie Kovacs of Austin College had a strong defensive weekend for Austin College at the Whittier Invitational, averaging 4.69 digs per set and totaling 75 for the weekend, while adding 17 assists and a service ace. She had a weekend-high of 26 digs against Whittier on Saturday evening. Junior defensive specialist Jenna Palomarez of Schreiner averaged 4.3 digs per set in the two matches she was the libero, including the Mountaineers' 3-1 win over NCAA tournament qualifier and host Marymount (Va.). Junior libero Jenna Rodriguez of Trinity had a rock solid effort during the East-West Battle over the weekend, finishing with 40 digs (3.33 per set) as the Tigers battled three highly ranked teams. Rodriguez had her best match against #9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps where she had 20 digs and 5.00 digs per set. Sophomore defensive specialist/libero Meghan Gannon of Colorado College averaged 3.36 digs per set and also had eight assists and four service aces as the Tigers went 1-2 on the week.
