Blair Barrows, Sewanee: University of the South, Volleyball

BLAIR BARROWS OF SEWANEE: UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH, a senior outside hitter on the women's volleyball team who hails from Atlanta, Ga., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending October 9, 2011.

Barrows, the captain of the women's volleyball team, has been a tireless volunteer in the Sewanee community.

She as worked with Folks at Home, an organization that assists home-bound persons. Her sophomore year, she assisted a woman who had been paralyzed following a stroke with physical therapy, and has assisted on other miscellaneous projects with the group. Barrows has also volunteered with the Skyland Trail, a facility that treats patients with depression, bi-polar disorders and other disorders. Specifically, she volunteered in the Recreational and Art therapies the summer of 2009.

Barrows also works with Sewanee Senior Citizens Outreach, eating lunch with the community members who come and hanging out with the women in the sewing room. She has also done other projects with the group, such as white-washing the Center, helping with the Christmas sale and making items for the Christmas sale.

She has tutoried at local schools through the Sewanee Education Department, working wtih five different schools since her sophomore year.

On campus, Barrows organized the PKE Sorority community service projects, including the Turkey Trot, a fundraiser run put on by her personal sorority - Theta Pi. She held the title Vice-President of Community Service through the fall of her junior year.

Currently, Barrows is advocating for more Community Engagement classes at Sewanee. She has collected letters from students who support the movement and is working on collecting more to present to the University.
