ALEXIS OVERDIEK OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a junior on the Mountaineers' women's soccer team, has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 12, 2018.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics while also serving their campus and community.

Overdiek is a junior outside defender/midfielder from Houston, Texas and an Environmental Biology major. She was on the SCAC Academic Honor Roll in both 2015 and 2016 and on the Academic Merit List in Fall of 2015 and 2016 and in the Spring of 2017.

On campus, Overdiek is involved with many programs outside of women's soccer, including the Mountaineer Leadership Academy, is the LEAD chairman, a Judicial Board member, and is the Student Leadership Affairs work study Assistant to Matt Goodwyn, the Assistant Dean of Students.

Mountaineer Leadership Academy is a 4-year learning community that helps target and develop leadership styles and skills. The students involved learn about leadership styles, different communication methods, how to start discussions, and situational leadership. The students then go more in depth on how to develop and engage in collaborative leadership skills and learn first-hand how to apply the concepts in real life scenarios. Being a part of this community has helped Alexis be more confident and learn various styles and applications to use in other aspects in her life.

LEAD is a new student run organization that Overdiek is the head chairman of. The purpose of the group is to collaborate with a variety of student leaders to help improve campus. The initiative is still in the early phases, and the group is currently developing ideas of how to get more students involved on campus.

Overdiek is in her second semester as a member of the Judicial Board. This was a new and unique way that helps her be involved on campus and has helped to expand her comfort zone. The group works with student cases after an individual gets in trouble, and the individual is given the opportunity to explain what happened in an open environment. With the evidence and judicial process, a decision is then determined by the board.

As the Student Leadership Affairs Assistant to the Assistant Dean of Students, Matt Goodwyn, Overdiek assists in coordinating leadership events on campus. She has helped with the Men’s and Women’s Leadership Summits, Mountaineer Leadership Conference, Pop-Con, and the Leadership Awards Banquet. Her favorite event so far has been Mountaineer Leadership Conference because it is a game about zombies and how to create a new world, everyone has their own objectives, but still has to come together to achieve the overall goal. This job position has also helped her develop communication skills and be more outgoing.

This past February, Overdiek and a few of her teammates went to help the Rotary Club of Kerrville with their Super Bowl fundraiser. They helped sell raffle tickets and run the games at the event. She is also currently coordinating dates to go to the Humane Society of Kerrville as a team.
