MAGGI LINKER OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore on the Tigers' volleyball team, has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 26, 2018.

The SCAC honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics while also serving their campus and community.

Linker is no stranger to serving her community, and in fact, she jumped to the aid of her fellow residents of her hometown of Wimberley, Texas. On Memorial Day Weekend 2015, the Blanco River rose and flooded the community, and Linker performed over 40 hours of service in the devastated area.

Linker also participated in four United Methodist Army mission trips throughout Texas from 2010-2013. The volunteer work involves a variety of projects, from painting to construction of wheelchair ramps.

A member of Trinity’s Gamma Chi Delta sorority, Linker organized an event for Camp CAMP, which stands for Children’s Association for Maximum Potential. It’s a local organization which provides recreational activities to children and adults with behavioral, physical, and intellectual exceptionalities.

Additionally, Linker is in the process of organizing a sand volleyball tournament next month for SRG Force Sports. The organization provides underserved kids with sports and fun activities.

In January of this year, Linker attended the NCAA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. She joined two other Trinity Tigers - football’s Davis King, and Ivy Claflin of women’s swimming - representing the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The group observed and imparted their thoughts to directors of athletics and the conference commissioner on NCAA legislation.

Linker, who plans to major in psychology and minor in sport management, was particularly interested in a seminar on mental health. She was impressed how the subject “has become more talked about in the athletic realm.”

Additionally, Linker joined her SAAC colleagues in volleyball activities at San Antonio’s Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children.

Linker definitely excels in the classroom. She is a Murchison Scholar, an accolade which is extremely difficult to achieve. Linker also has earned SCAC Academic Honor Roll kudos.

On the volleyball court, Linker led the 11th-ranked Tigers in total blocks. The team captain was elected to the SCAC All-Tournament Team. Trinity was edged 3-2 by Colorado College in the conference championship match. After advancing to their 23rd NCAA Division III Tournament, the Tigers came up short in the opening round to Pacific Lutheran (WA) University, and finished the season with a 27-8 record.
