Kara Miller, Schreiner University, Women's Tennis

Kara Miller of Schreiner University, a senior on the Mountaineers women’s tennis team, has been selected as the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 11.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics and serve their campus and community.

Miller just began her final season with the Schreiner University Women’s Tennis team. She is a Chemistry major from Burkburnett, Texas.

This is Kara’s first year with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on campus. She is the Vice President of the organization and has been involved with multiple events on and off campus. One of Kara’s favorite initiatives in SAAC this year has been being a Buddy at “A Night to Shine” sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. The event was created to be an unforgettable prom night experience for people with special needs. She helped Schreiner write and collect over 2,000 Letters to Santa, and for every letter written, Macy’s donated $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Miller has also helped with a Book Drive for the Doyle School located in Kerrville, Texas and participated in the “Donut Forget to Study” giveaway event where SAAC gave out donut holes to students during finals week.

For the past four years, Kara has been one of 12 students who make up an elite group called the Ancient and Honorable Order of the Campus. Each member of the group represents one of Schreiner’s first graduating class, with a mission to preserve and promote the University’s rich history and traditions. This year, the group has designed and created float for the Kerrville Christmas parade, hosted a booth at the Kerrville Halloween Bash, assisted with all major ceremonies on campus, and help write, collect, and deliver Macy’s Letters to Santa campaign. Kara enjoys the responsibility to preserve Schreiner’s traditions while also having the opportunity to create new traditions and leave her mark on campus.

Kara is a Senior Resident Assistant on campus. Through this position she is able to develop her leadership and organizational skills. Her favorite part of the role is getting to know all of the residents and getting to build a better and stronger community through Residence Life.

Miller has also volunteered with the Humane Society in Kerrville and helped package meals with Rise Against Hunger on campus.
