LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - JOSH BORING OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a junior on the Roos' baseball team from Denton, Texas, has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Character and Community Male Student-Athlete of the week beginning March 4.
When he finishes up his career at Austin College, ’Roo baseball player Josh Boring will be following the path of many of the student who pass through Sherman and head to medical school. Of course, what separates the junior native of Denton from plenty of the students who have come before him is his vast practical experience not just in working at hospitals, but also in his advocacy for the people he will eventually be working alongside.
Since his high school years, Boring has been actively fighting for registered nurses, dating all the way back to 2011 when he spoke to the Dention school board about the importance of having registered school nurses at all of the schools within the district. That’s a cause he has continued to champion ever since, eventually pushing for registered school nurses at every school across the nation. His fight for registered nurses earned him a trip to Washington DC, where he was able to get his proposal in front of members of Congress and the Senate. He was able to do that through being chosen as the Bill of Rights Institute’s candidate for the state of Texas.
While his proposal was ultimately shot down, that hasn’t stopped Boring from continuing to advocate for nurses across the country. In 2018 he spoke at the Texas School Nurse Organization’s yearly conference, and in 2014 was recognized by the both the Denton Independent School District and the Texas School Nurses Association for his leadership in promoting school nurses and the health of Texas school-age children. The latter organization awarded him their President’s Award for his efforts.
Along with his continued efforts for registered nurses, Boring has also worked extensively with both Toys for Tots and Meals on Wheels, and has served as an Austin College Students Today Alumni Tomorrow (STAT) representative for the past three years. His work has been published by Food Allergy Research and Education, and he is also the co-author of the children’s book The Adventures of Olaf Marzipan.
