PIRATES DOMINATE IN 2-0 WIN

PIRATES DOMINATE IN 2-0 WIN

On a beautiful and breezy day in Georgetown, the Pirates took on Ogelthorpe University.  The match started with the Stormy Petrels pushing up into the Pirates' backfield and taking the first shot of the game.  After that shot, the Pirates took control for the rest of the game.  Four minutes into the match Maria Pollifrone took a pass at midfield from Jillian Curran and drove to the 18 yard box.  After drawing a defender to herself she passed the ball to Danielle Madison who had only the keeper to beat.  Madison put a low ball past the keeper for the first goal of the game.  The Stormy Petrels struggled to put significant pressure on the Pirates in the first half managing only 3 shots, 2 of which were from long distance.  The Pirate offense and defense kept the ball on Oglethorpe's side of the field for most of the first half.  The Pirates took only three shots but all three were on goal and the Pirates also managed 3 corners, each more dangerous than the first.  Luck seemed to be the only thing keeping the Stormy Petrels in the game.

The second half started much like the first.  After a deep drive into Ogelthorpe territory thanks to great ball handling several Pirates, Jillian Curran forced a diving save by the Petrel keeper after jumping on a defelection by a Petrel defender off a cross.  In another closs call for the Pirates, Paige Duggins passed back to Jillian Curran at the top of the 18 yard box.  Curran's driving kick just missed the upper left 90.  In another strong attempt halfway through the second half, Haley Duggins intercepted a bad pass by the Petrels and delivered a strong shot just over the crossbar.  The second goal of the day for the Pirates came off the foot of Laura Ornelas after an assist from Jillian Curran set her up in perfect position 10 yards out in front of the keeper all by herself.  Ornelas sent a shot toward the right post, just out of the reach of the keeper.  With fifteen minutes remaining in the game, this sealed the victory for the Pirates.

Southwestern dominated in all facets of the game, not just the scoreboard.  The Southwestern woemn took 9 more shots (14-3)with a whopping 10 in the second half and four more corners (6-2).  The Pirates improved to 8-6-1 overall and 4-3 in conference and will resume play Sunday when they host Sewanee.  Ogelthorpe dropped to 7-7-2 overall and 0-6-1 in conference.
