Wilmington College and Centre College split a wild non-conference doubleheader at the WC Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon.

The Quakers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener, 6-5, and Centre used big innings to take game two, 9-5.

Wilmington is now 11-9 on the season and Centre leaves town at 9-15.

The opener provided Wilmington's first big comeback win of the season. The Quakers trailed, 3-0, after Centre put two runs on the board in the third inning.

Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) and Holly Sheets (Richwood/North Union) delivered RBIs in the home fifth as Wilmington cut Centre's lead to 3-2.

"Holly had a nice day at the plate and Stacy continued to produce. She has been amazing for us this year, offensively and defensively," Wilmington head coach Beth Floyd said. "She made a lot of things happen for us today and made a beautiful diving catch in left field."

After both teams scored a run in the fifth, the Colonels took a 5-3 lead with a run in the top of the seventh.

Lunsford led off the seventh with her third single of the game, and scored on a Sheets single. After a single off the bat of Kaylee Cox (Prospect/Elgin) and an intentional walk to Christine Tiell (Tiffin/Columbian), Becker drew a base on balls that forced home a run and tied the game at 5.

Erika Lee (Blanchester) then popped out to the Centre shortstop, who made an attempt to tag Cox, who had strayed off second base. While the play near second base was unfolding, Symone McElroy (Springfield/North) tagged up at third and raced home with the winning run.

"I was really proud of the kids in the first game," Floyd said. "We struggled a little bit, but they kept fighting. That was a big come-from-behind win. They did an excellent job of getting the win."

Catlin Shilling (Waverly) went 4.1 innings of relief to earn her first collegiate victory.

In game two, Centre scored three runs in the fourth inning and four more in the seventh to pull away from Wilmington.

"We just had a couple big errors that put us in a hole," Floyd said.

Wilmington's bats were noisy in the nightcap. Brooke Byrne (Wilmington) led the Quakers' 11-hit attack with a double and two singles. Tiell and Becker added two hits apiece.

Wilmington will host Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
