
Gents Finish In 3-3 Tie Against Schreiner
The Centenary men's soccer team earned a 3-3 draw against the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Friday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at Mountaineer Soccer Field.
Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary men's soccer team earned a 3-3 draw against the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Friday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at Mountaineer Soccer Field.
The Gents (7-8-2, 3-6-1 SCAC) finished in a tie for the first time since Sept. 6 at home when they finished 1-1 against Howard Payne. Schreiner (3-11-2, 2-6-2 SCAC) is now 2-3-2 at home this season while the Gents are 2-3-1 on the road.
Centenary led 1-0 at halftime after freshman MF Kevin Huskey Jr. (Dallas, Texas) scored in the 42nd minute and was assisted by junior MF Brandon Guevara (Henderson, Texas). The goal was Huskey Jr.'s fourth of the season while Guevara tallied his second assist.
Both offenses came alive in the second half and it started with the Gents finding the net for the second time to take a 2-0 lead after sophomore F Carter Webb (Flower Mound, Texas) scored an unassisted goal just less than three minutes into the half at the 47:36 mark. The goal was Webb's fourth of the season.
Schreiner, however, rallied and scored the next three goals to take a 3-2 lead at the 65:39 mark as Bhodey Miller scored an unassisted goal. Miller's goal earlier in the half (53:07) got the Mountaineers on the board and Zaaron Gonzalez scored to make it 2-2 with 59:31 remaining. Gonzalez scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season.
Sophomore D Dylan Clark (Allen, Texas) found the net in the 89th minute off the assist from senior MF Brennan Amato (Denham Springs, La.) to tie the match at 3-3. The goal was Clark's second this season while Amato's assist was his second.
Senior GK Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) made his second start of the season and went the distance as he recorded a single-match career-high eight saves. Schreiner GK Mason Szymanski also played all 90 minutes and made six saves.
Both teams were aggressive as Schreiner finished with a 21-17 advantage in shots and the Gents took six corner kicks to the Mountaineers' five. The teams were whistled for 11 fouls – six by Schreiner and five by Centenary and the Gents were tagged with a pair of yellow cards.
The Gents finish their regular season at Trinity University on Sunday in San Antonio in a match set for Noon.
