
Gents Open SCAC Play with 1-0 Shutout Of Ozarks

Shreveport - The Centenary men's soccer team remained unbeaten on its home field as the Gents recorded their third shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over the University of the Ozarks Eagles to open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play Friday evening at Atkins Field.
The Gents (5-2-1, 1-0 SCAC) won their second match in a row after a 3-1 victory over ETBU last Saturday and are off to their best start to a season since beginning the 2019 campaign at 6-2. The Gents were picked to finish in a tie for ninth place in the conference this season in the preseason poll while the Eagles were picked to finish eighth.
The Eagles (3-4-2) lost their second in a row after falling 2-0 to Hendrix College at home on Monday. Centenary exacted revenge on Ozarks after the Eagles posted an 8-0 victory in the matchup last season in Clarksville, Ark. Centenary, now 3-0-1 at home this season, evened the all-time series 2-2. Ozarks fell to 1-1-1 on the road so far this season.
Freshman MF Emiliano Mondragon (Dallas, Texas) scored the Gents' goal on Friday as he found the net in the 57th minute with the assist going to senior MF Brennan Amato (Denham Springs, La.). The goal was Mondragon's second of the season while the assist was Amato's first this season and sixth in his career.
Freshman GK Sebastian Lutin (Fort Worth, Texas) went the distance in goal for the Gents and made three saves in his 90 minutes. The rookie posted his second shutout of the season. Ozarks GK Abdoulali Ibrahim Jirani also went the distance in goal for the Eagles and made four saves.
Ozarks finished with a slight edge (13-11) in shots but the Gents had five shots on goal to the Eagles' three. Each team was whistled for 17 fouls in a physical, aggressive match and seven yellow cards were issued – four to Ozarks and three to Centenary. The Gents took four corner kicks on the night and the Eagles took three.
The Gents will be off for a week before returning to action next Friday for another SCAC contest against the University of St. Thomas Celts (4-2) who open their conference slate on Saturday at Colorado College.
