Celts Survive

Houston, Texas – October should be a perfect time of year for college soccer; however, the Houston heat refuses to subside. The temperature again hit the 90-degree mark Sunday afternoon and made for another hot afternoon on the pitch. Thankfully, the Celts' soccer student-athletes thrived in the heat and earned a solid 2-0 win over Schreiner University at SaberCats Stadium. The victory improves the Celts' record to 8-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the Conference. It also keeps the Celts' SCAC Tournament hopes alive going into the season's final weekend. With additional teams in the league (12), making the 4-team conference tournament is no easy task.

Strong defensive efforts from both teams marked the opening half. St. Thomas finally broke through in the 19th minute with a goal from freshman Hani Ahmadie, assisted by Leonardo Herrera. Schreiner responded by intensifying their offensive efforts, creating three excellent chances, but the Celts' Goalkeeper, Gustavo Otero, with the help of the pole, kept a clean sheet, maintaining a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The second half continued to be a defensive standoff until the 86th minute when Tony Castro found the back of the net with an assist from Hani Ahmadie, sealing the game for the Celts 2-0.
