SEGUIN, Texas – Fourth-seeded Southwestern University relied upon starting pitcher Sophia Ytuarte in the circle, as well as at the plate as she tossed 7.0 innings and recorded two RBI in the Pirates' 9-3 win over the fifth-seeded Centenary College Ladies in game one of the 2024 SCAC Softball Championship on Friday afternoon on the campus of host institution Texas Lutheran University. Official Website | Bracket l Postgame Interview l Photo Gallery | Tournament Stats

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ytuarte earned a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning as the Pirates relied on the first inning to put the game away
  • Southwestern scored eight runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by an Erica Otto run-scoring single.
  • The Pirates took advantage of seven Centenary walks, including four with the bases loaded.  
  • Mackenzie Cox pulled the Ladies to within 9-3 with an RBI double to left center in the top of the seventh. 
  • Ytuarte tossed seven innings while scattering six hits and striking out two in the win.

NOTABLES

  • Southwestern improved to 5-3 all-time against Centenary in the SCAC Softball Championship as well as 30-25 overall in SCAC postseason play. The Tigers went 1-0 agains the Ladies at last year's tournament. 
  • Southwestern improved to 16-24 on the season
  • Centenary saw its record fall to 13-26.
