GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Men's Cross Country hosted the SU Showdown in Georgetown, Texas on Saturday, September 14th for their second meet of the season. The Pirates took home first place overall as a team making it two years in a row!
Coach Joe Sponsel had this to say about the meet "Defending home turf 2 years in a row for the men is a great achievement, especially over conference competition. We talked about building through the race and season being the theme for the men and they took another great step today. I saw a lot of patience in handling the longer distance the 8k provides. We also did well in building from last year to this year with mostly the same group. We had a lot of year-over-year improvement from this race last year. The jump from 5k to 8k is a significant one and for the freshmen, their definition of success today was to race with patience, a poised demeanor, and learn as much as they can about the new distance. Talking with them after the race they know exactly where they can improve and what they did well. I'm excited to keep working on those things in training over the next 3 weeks before the next 8k.
I also want to give a special shout out to Gannon Hall. Gannon may not have won the SU Showdown this year, but his time of 31:12 was 2 minutes faster than his race last year. He spent much of his first 2-3 college years injured or returning from injury, but his dedication to taking care of his body, his work ethic, and commitment to making himself and this team better has never wavered. He shows up early to practice every single day to get his band exercises in and his result today is a testament to all the work he puts in. He deserves a lot of respect, praise, and every PR he earns and I want to shout him out. He's a great example for the rest of our team and Pirate Athletics as a whole."
