Pirotte, Perkins lead Tigers past Millsaps

Senior middle blockers Erika Pirotte and Emily Perkins combined for 23 kills to lead top-seeded Colorado College to a 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 victory over Millsaps College in the second round of the 2010 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Friday afternoon.

Pirotte had a match-high 13 kills and completed her fifth double-double of the season with 10 digs. Perkins added 10 kills while hitting a blistering .526 with no errors on 19 attacks.

CC finished the match with nine blocks and held the Majors to a .112 team hitting percentage.

Freshman middle blocker Devin Wilkinson had a hand in six blocked shots, while junior right-side hitter Meredith Ballard was in on five. Sophomore libero Laura Goldsmith added 11 digs.

Junior setter Amy Schornack had 30 assists to run her season total to 1,146, which ranks second on the program's single-season list. She needs only 47 more to break Larissa Enns' record of 1,192 set in 2001.

The Majors led 13-10 in the first set, but the Tigers answered with an 8-1 run to take command and Millsaps never got closer than two points.

CC fell behind early in the second set, but after Millsaps tied the game at 15-15, Perkins had all three of her blocked shots to help the Tigers score 10 of the last 14 points.

It looked as though the Majors were going to extend the match when they built a 14-9 lead in the third set. This time, Perkins had a pair of kills to start the comeback and then served six consecutive points to ignite a 9-2 burst that put Colorado College ahead to stay.

Pirotte had five kills late in the set as the Tigers built a 23-8 lead, and then CC closed out the match on a kill by Schornack and a blocked shot by Wilkinson and Ballard.

Kasey Laird seven kills and nine digs to pace Millsaps.

Colorado College improved to 28-6 with its third victory against the Majors this season.

CC, which had a bye in the opening round, will square off against tournament host Trinity University on Saturday at 11:15 p.m. TU advanced by defeating Austin College 25-17, 28-26, 12-25, 24-26, 15-13.
