SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- After dropping three consecutive contests, the No. 25 Texas Lutheran baseball team bounced back to top No. 15 Trinity University, 6-5, Sunday night at Trinity Baseball Field in San Antonio.
Trinity (26-8, 16-2 SCAC) outscored Texas Lutheran (26-10, 15-3 SCAC), 22-9, across the first two games, but the Bulldogs responded in the series finale. Six different Bulldogs would score and four different Bulldogs would register RBIs led by Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) who hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, the first of his college career.
Logan Fisher (Thorndale/Thorndale) started and pitched six innings, allowing two runs, one unearned, on four hits and three walks. He struck out five batters to set a new career high and record the win, his fourth of the season.
After a 30-plus minute rain delay that saw action pause in the top of the ninth, Blade Strzelczyk (San Antonio/East Central) would relieve Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) on the mound with two on and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth. He would stop the Tigers ninth inning rally dead in its tracks - striking out his first batter before rolling a double play to end the game and picking up his seventh save of the season.
The Bulldogs scored the first run of the game on an RBI single from Joe Jimenez (San Antonio/Johnson) in the first inning then would double their lead in the second via a RBI double from Payton Dahl (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge). A two-run home run from Carson Draehn would give TLU a 4-0 lead through four innings.
The Trinity offense came alive in the seventh - cutting the Bulldogs lead in half to make the score 4-2 entering the eighth inning. Trinity would score another run in the eighth to bring the score to 4-3. The score would remain there for the better part of an hour due to a lightning delay with the Bulldogs at the plate in the top of the ninth.
The Bulldogs picked up where they left off after the delay as a Trinity fielding error on a fly ball from Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) plated two runs to extend the Bulldogs lead to 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth.
Trinity would attempt to rally to tie the ball game as a two-run home run made it a one run game but Strzelczyk was able to keep the Tigers offense at bay securing the Bulldogs win in the series finale.
