
Gents Dominate Dallas On Sunday At Home, 92-65
The Centenary men's basketball team cruised to a 92-65 victory over the University of Dallas Crusaders on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Gold Dome.
Shreveport - The Centenary men's basketball team cruised to a 92-65 victory over the University of Dallas Crusaders on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Gold Dome.
The Gents (4-8, 2-1 SCAC) won for the third time in four games and posted their largest margin of victory this season and largest ironically since defeating the Crusaders at home last season, 97-64. Dallas fell to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play and lost for the fifth time to fall to 1-5 on the road. The Gents improved to 3-5 at home this season and are 25-10 over their last 35 games at the Gold Dome and are now 46-16 in the Gold Dome since the beginning of the 2019-20 season.
Centenary, which scored a season high in points, was impressive in all facets offensively on Sunday as the Maroon and White finished 29-59 from the floor (49.2 %) and particularly shot the ball well from long range, finishing 12-28 beyond the arc for 42.9 %. The Gents also went 22-25 at the free-throw line for 88 % and turned the ball over a season-low six times. The Gents finished 45.2 % from the floor and a red-shot 53.6 % after halftime while the Crusaders went 42.1 % in the first half and 54.5 % in the second period.
Dallas also shot the ball well, making 20-41 attempts for 48.8 %, and finished 10-21 from 3-point range for 47.6 %. The Crusaders finished 15-25 at the FT line for 60 % and turned the ball over 25 times. Dallas outrebounded Centenary 33-22, with 24 defensive rebounds and nine offensive boards. The Gents grabbed 16 defensive rebounds and six offensive boards.
The Gents tallied a season-high 18 steals, 11 assists, and blocked one shot while the Crusaders finished with 13 assists, three steals, and one blocked shot. Centenary won the battle inside, getting 30 points in the paint to Dallas' 10, and finished with a whopping 43-2 edge in points off of turnovers. The Gents finished with a slight edge in bench points (10-9), second-chance points (8-7), and had 11 fast break points while the Crusaders scored just two.
Centenary led 45-25 at halftime after making six treys, only turning the ball over four times, and forcing 14 Dallas TO's. The Gents edged the Crusaders 47-40 in a competitive second half that saw both teams shoot over 50 % from the floor.
Junior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) continued his torrid offensive output as he scored a game-high 25 points and was one of four Gents in double figures. Senior F Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas) scored a season-high 23, senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) had 19, and senior G Jalen Ned (New Orleans, La.) scored 15. Freshman G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) and senior G Kyron Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) each scored four and freshman G Noah Brookter (Youngsville, La.) had two. Freshman G Allen Paul (Katy, Texas) was held scoreless in 20 minutes but had two assists and two steals.
Beverly, who missed the first six games of the season with an injury, has now reached double figures five times and scored a career-high 32 points on Tuesday against LeTourneau. He played 34 minutes on Sunday and finished 8-16 from the floor and 6-11 from beyond the arc. He was 3-3 at the FT line with three steals, three rebounds, and two assists. Beverly is averaging 21.2 PPG and scored 29 in his season debut against Ozarks at home on Dec. 4. He nailed a season-best six treys on Sunday and has now his five or more three times this season.
Greenleaf added a team-high six rebounds in 34 minutes and was 7-9 from the floor and 9-11 at the FT line with three steals and two assists. Collier scored in double figures for the seventh time this season and fourth game in a row. He was 5-13 from the floor, 3-6 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 6-6 at the FT line in 24 minutes with three boards, three assists, and two steals. Collier is now 40-43 from the FT this season (93 %) as he entered the day ranked second in the conference and 17th nationally in division III in FT %.
Ned also scored in double figures for the seventh time and played 28 minutes as he finished 6-10 from the floor and 3-5 from beyond the arc. He had three rebounds and three steals. Addison was 1-2 from the floor and 2-2 at the FT line in 17 minutes with three rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot and Powell was 2-6 from the floor with two assists, two steals, and a rebound in 23 minutes. Freshman G Trenton Thomas (Cedar Hill, Texas) played five minutes and grabbed a rebound, sophomore G Andre Kanu (Duncanville, Texas) had a rebound in his three minutes, and junior G Kyron Williams (Bastrop, La.) made his season debut and had a steal in his two minutes.
Thomas Fleming led Dallas in scoring with 21 points, Aaron Pizana had 14, Terrance Bryant finished with 11, and Johny Olmsted had 10. Jack Boyle, who entered the day averaging 15.8 PPG was held to just five points in 22 minutes as he was only 1-2 from the floor and went 3-6 at the FT line but did grab a game-high nine rebounds. TJ Williams added four points in six minutes off the bench. Fleming was 5-10 from the floor, 4-7 from beyond the arc, and 7-8 at the FT line in 35 minutes with three rebounds. Olmsted played 37 minutes and had seven assists and two boards and was 3-7 from the floor, 1-3 from 3-point range, and 3-4 at the FT line. Bryant and Pizana each grabbed five rebounds, Boyle and Pizana each had two assists, and Pizana added two steals.
The Gents got out to a 5-0 lead and it grew to 10-4 and 14-7. Bryant made a layup for the Crusaders to make it a 14-9 game at the 14:22 mark of the first half, and then Centenary went on an astounding 18-0 run which made it 32-9 with 7:40 remaining in the first half after a trey by Ned. A FT by Boyle at the 6:28 mark finally enabled Dallas to reach double figures, but the Gents took their comfortable 20-point lead into the locker room. Beverly nailed a trey to balloon the Gents' lead to 30 at 56-26 with 18:16 left in the game and their sharp shooting continued which allowed them to coast to the home win.
The Gents and Crusaders will meet again next month, on Saturday, Feb. 22 in Irving, Texas in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Gents will continue their four-game homestand they will next face Austin College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and then welcome both Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University to town next weekend.
