
Ladies Downed At Ozarks On Saturday
The Centenary women's basketball team lost 84-44 to the University of the Ozarks Eagles in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday inside Mabee Gymnasium.
Clarksville, Ark. – The Centenary women's basketball team lost 84-44 to the University of the Ozarks Eagles in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday inside Mabee Gymnasium.
The Ladies (1-9, 0-2 SCAC) lost their eighth game in a row and dropped to 1-4 on the road this season while the Eagles (8-3, 2-0 SCAC) won their third in a row and improved to 6-1 at home this season. Ozarks swept the season series following a 68-54 on Dec. 4 in Shreveport and now leads the all-time series 8-1.
Ozarks led 40-24 at halftime after outscoring Centenary 19-11 in the first quarter and 21-13 in the second period. The Eagles widened their lead after a 28-11 advantage in the third and outscored the Ladies 16-9 in the final 10 minutes to finish off the win.
Junior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) and freshman F Anaya Yunusah (New Orleans, La.) each scored 14 points to lead the Ladies and the Eagles Dalena Fisher led all scorers with a game-high 27 points. Abby Beene (16), Naomi Smith (14), and Kesley Ground (11) joined Fisher in double figures for the Eagles.
Freshman G Kaysharia Woods (Zachary, La.) added six for the Ladies and five Centenary players scored two points apiece – junior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.), freshman F/C Marilynn Guillory (Sulphur, La.), freshman F Jordynn Patton (Orange, Texas), freshman F Brooklyn Cooper (Euless, Texas), and freshman G Julissa Cabrera (Denham Springs, La.).
Freshman G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) came into the game averaging a team-high 12.0 PPG but was held scoreless in 19 minutes. Junior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) was also scoreless in 19 minutes off the bench with two assists, two rebounds, and one steal. Patton and Yunusah each grabbed a team-best five rebounds and Rivera and Stokes each had three.
The Ladies finished 18-51 (35.3 %) from the floor, 4-15 (26.7 %) from beyond the arc, and 4-8 from the free-throw line (50 %). The Eagles were a red-hot 50.9 % (27-53) from the floor, 8-21 (38.1 %) from the 3-point line, and a strong 22-26 from the FT line for 84.6 %. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 34-28, and finished with 21 assists, 10 steals, and three blocked shots. The Ladies tallied six assists, five steals, and one blocked shot.
Ozarks won the battle in the paint, 36-24, and finished with a decisive advantage in fast break points (29-2), scored 25 points off of 18 Ladies' turnovers, and its bench outscored Centenary's 34-20. Ozarks turned the ball over 12 times which Centenary turned into seven points, and the Ladies finished with a slight edge (12-8) in second-chance points.
The Ladies return to action next Saturday at home as they will face the Austin College 'Roos in the first of four-consecutive games at the Gold Dome.
