JACKSON, Miss. – The Pirates scored a goal late in the
match but were unable to double up through two overtimes at
Millsaps College on Friday night as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Southwestern moves to 7-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the SCAC while
Millsaps goes to 6-3-3 and 1-2-2 in the conference.
Millsaps came out attacking, taking the first three shots of the
game. Junior Danielle Madison got the Pirates in the shot column in
the 20th minute, but her header was saved by MC’s Sarah
Nelin.
The first half ended in a 0-0 tie with teams being nearly even in
shots as well (SU 3, MC 4).
Early in the second half, Southwestern pressured the Millsaps
defense and junior Amy Douglas got a shot off from point blank
range that forced Millsaps’ goalkeeper Nelin to make a tough
save to keep the Pirates off the board.
On the ensuing corner kick, a shot from sophomore Laura Ornelas had
to be cleared off the goal line by Harris to keep the score tied
0-0.
In the 68th minute, Millsaps’ Hayley Nemeth got a pass from
Jessica Harris and fired a shot from just outside the box that
bounced off the hands of first-year goalkeeper Sarah Nonaka and
went between her legs and trickled over the goal line for a 1-0
Millsaps lead.
The lead would not last long as the Pirates scored the equalizer
just ten minutes later when a shot by sophomore Maria Pollifrone
beat Nelin. The goal was Pollifrone’s third of the season and
third in the last four games.
Southwestern made one final push for the win in regulation with
just ten seconds left to play, but were called offside to end the
threat.
Neither team was able to generate much pressure in the two overtime
periods as they both looked exhausted. Both teams were able to get
one shot on goal in each overtime, but both keepers kept the game
tied with saves.
The game was nearly tied all around as both teams recorded 14
shots, but Southwestern took three more corners than the
Majors.
The Pirates remain on the road for another SCAC conference match at
Birmingham-Southern on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
