Women's Soccer Picks Up First Victory Over Schreiner

The University of St. Thomas Women's Soccer team snagged their first victory of the season against Schreiner University. The Celts were able to capitalize off a Schreiner own goal in the 84th minute which ultimately secured the win for UST.

The Celts goalkeeper Carmen Lozada found herself being tested time and time again in the first half. Lozada recorded 5 huge saves to keep the score knotted at zero. UST's first big opportunity came at the 14th minute with Desiree Lewis shot on goal, yet this was saved by the Mountaineers to keep the game scoreless entering the break.

In the first five minutes of the second half the Celts offense pressured the Mountaineers, immediately forcing Schriener Goalkeeper Audrey Rivera to make back-to-back saves. It was an evenly matched battle the rest of the half, as both teams pressed the others defensive prowess. The Celts recorded 5 shots on goal in the period, but all would be deterred.

In the last 10 minutes of the match the Celts found themselves playing down a man, but this did not stop them offensively. After UST was awarded a corner in the 84th minute, Aeriana Lewis stepped up to take it; crossing the ball into the box, which ended up in the back of the net after the Mountaineers goalkeeper deflected it in.

"Being a young team it's nice to get a good result" Head Coach Nick Morrison said. "It was a pretty hard-fought game; we have some things to clean up but ultimately it was nice to get a win."

The Celts return to action next Friday when they travel away to face Texas Lutheran University.
