
Ladies' Second-Half Rally Falls Short At Schreiner On Friday
The Centenary women's basketball team fell by a score of 72-63 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Friday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside Stephens Family Arena.
Kerrville, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team fell by a score of 72-63 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Friday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside Stephens Family Arena.
The Ladies (2-15, 1-8 SCAC) lost for the sixth-straight time and dropped to 1-7 on the road this season. The Mountaineers (4-14, 2-7 SCAC) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-6 at home. Schreiner now leads the all-time series with Centenary, 11-4, and has won three in a row over the Ladies.
The Ladies shot 41.3 % (19-46) from the floor for the game, 0-1 from beyond the arc, and 25-33 at the free-throw line for 75.8 %. The Mountaineers and Ladies each pulled down 36 rebounds and each team scored 36 points in the paint. The Mountaineers shot 33.8 % (26-77) from the floor for the game, 24.2 % (8-33) from beyond the arc, and 12-16 at the FT line for 75 %.
The Mountaineers finished with a 17-11 advantage in second-chance points, 23-21 in fast break points, 25-10 in bench points, and scored 29 points off of Centenary's 31 turnovers. The Ladies turned 17 Schreiner TO's into 20 points. Centenary finished with 10 steals, three assists, and two blocked shots while Schreiner had 17 assists, 20 steals, and one blocked shot.
Schreiner led 22-11 after the first quarter and outscored Centenary 25-16 to lead 47-27 at halftime. The Ladies, though, outscored the Mountaineers in the second half 36-25, but the 20-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome. Centenary scored 16 points in the third period to Schreiner's 11 and outscored the Mountaineers 20-14 in the final quarter.
Freshman G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) led all scorers with a game-high 21 points as she finished 6-12 from the floor and 9-10 at the FT line in 32 minutes. The rookie just missed matching her season high of 22 points which she scored last weekend against Southwestern as she scored 20+ points for the third time this season. She added a season-high tying six steals and three rebounds as she reached double figures for the ninth time this season.
Freshman F Shyanne Phillips (Leesville, La.) scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds for an impressive double-double in 33 minutes. She finished 5-8 from the floor and 7-9 at the FT line with two assists, two blocked shots, and a steal. Phillips reached double figures for the eighth time this season and recorded her seventh double-double.
Junior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) scored 10 points in her 35 minutes as she was 3-6 from the floor and 4-6 at the FT line with four rebounds and three steals. Powell scored in double figures for the seventh time this season.
Freshman F Laijah Rockward (Houma, La.) scored a season-high six points in 15 minutes as she was 2-2 from the floor and 2-2 at the FT line with two rebounds and an assist. Freshman F Alisha Green (Lafayette, La.) scored a season-high five points in 24 minutes as she was 1-1 from the floor and 3-6 at the FT line with a rebound. Freshman F Anaya Yunusah (New Orleans, La.) and freshman F/C Marilynn Guillory (Sulphur, La.) each chipped in two points.
Four Schreiner players reached double figures, led by 20 from Brie Sosa. Bel Martinez had 13, Jaydee Zamora had 11, and Skye Thomas scored 10. Six Mountaineers combined to score 18 points. Thomas and Sosa each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, Martinez had six, and Madison Parham grabbed five.
Centenary's road trip concludes on Sunday afternoon in San Antonio as the Ladies face Trinity University at 4 p.m.
