CC Pushes No. 22 Trinity to the Limit

Colorado College no longer is interested in moral victories, but there's no question that Sunday's 82-74 loss to No. 22 Trinity University should serve as a confidence builder heading into the last week of the regular season and beyond.

Thanks in part to a balanced offensive performance that saw five players record double-digit points, CC gave the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference co-leaders all it could handle before foul trouble caught up with the upset-minded hosts late in the fourth quarter.

Colorado College led 66-65 after freshman guard Jade Odom connected on a three-pointer from the left wing with 5:08 remaining in the game and were within a point when junior guard Casey Torbet scored on a layup with 2:23 to play.

However, senior forward Mollie Hughes scored five straight points as TU pulled away during the final two minutes.

It was obvious during the first quarter that this match-up would be much different than the first meeting on Jan. 6 in San Antonio.

After falling behind by four points during the opening two minutes, CC stormed back with an 11-2 run and opened its largest lead of the contest at 15-10.

Trinity surged to a seven-point lead when senior guard Micah Weaver hit one of her three long-range shots with a little more than three minutes remaining before halftime, only to see Colorado College cut its deficit to 40-38 on a three-pointer by Odom.

Despite leading by six points on two occasions during the third quarter, the visiting Tigers could not establish any significant separation and CC clawed its way back into the lead when freshman winger McKenzee Gertz scored two of her team-high 17 points with 7:33 to play.

Gertz, a leading candidate for the SCAC's Freshman-of-the-Year award, completed her seventh double-double of the season with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Odom, meanwhile, finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Torbet dished out a game-high seven assists and added eight points for Colorado College, which dropped to 8-16 overall and 5-8 in the SCAC.

CC currently is tied with Centenary College for fifth place in the conference standings with one game remaining. Colorado College plays host to the University of Dallas next Saturday afternoon in its regular-season finale, while the Ladies visit Austin College later that day.

The top six teams earn a berth in the conference championship, which will be played Feb. 23-25 at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

Weaver finished with 37 points for TU, which improved to 18-3 overall and 11-1 in conference play.
