Tigers Take Two at WashU Invitational

The second-ranked Colorado College volleyball team improved to 19-1 with a pair of victories on Friday at the WashU Invitational.

The Tigers began the day with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-20 victory over UW-Platteville, and defeated Augustana College 25-18, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17 in the nightcap.

Junior outside hitter Haley Harris led the Tigers with 11 kills.

Junior middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling smashed 10 kills on 14 attempts with just one error, which was good for a team-leading .643 attack percentage.

Junior setter Lizzy Counts led CC with 16 digs, while Harris and Spaethling each had a hand in three blocks.

In the first match against UWP, the CC defense dominated the first set by blocking five shots while holding the Pioneers to a -.077 hitting percentage.

Freshman outside hitter Isabella Vasquez put down three of her five kills on six swings to lead Colorado College to a .409 percentage.

The second set was level at 10-10, but Spaethling produced four kills and a pair of blocks during a 10-3 run that gave the Tigers a commanding lead.  

Spaethling was red-hot during the final set, putting away six kills on seven swings and CC overcame a 17-16 deficit by scoring nine of the last 12 points.

As a team, Colorado College blocked seven shots while holding the Pioneers to a -.031 hitting percentage, which was the fourth time this season an opponent hit negative against the Tigers.

Olivia Kudronowicz had six kills for the Pioneers, while Madie Sailors recorded a team-high 10 digs.  

Vasquez led the Tigers with 13 kills in the four-set win over Augustana, which was playing its first match of the day. She hit .417 on 24 attacks with only three errors.

Senior opposite hitter Aria Dudley and Harris added 10 kills apiece for CC. Harris added 11 digs to complete her ninth double-double of the season with 11 digs.

In addition to her 39 assists and 10 digs, Counts put down seven kills on 10 attempts and finished with a team-best .600 hitting percentage.

Junior libero Anna Gurolnick recorded a match-high 18 digs for Colorado College, while senior middle hitter produced eight kills and had a hand in three blocked shots.

Spaethling added seven kills and three solo blocks.

The Tigers broke the first set open with a 14-4 run and carried the momentum through set No. 2.

CC trailed by as many as four points in the third set before storming back to level the score at 17-17. However, after Colorado College tied the game at 23-23 on a Vasquez kill, the Vikings scored the final two points to extend the match.

Colorado College utilized a 12-2 run in the early stages of the fourth set to put an end to any thoughts of an Auggie comeback. The Vikings never got closer than six points before Counts closed out the match.  

Grace Bialobok led Augustana with a match-high 14 kills, while Sierra Erke added 11.

The Tigers face the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Saturday's first match on Saturday, and then finishes the tournament with a showdown against No. 11 Washington University at 2:30 p.m. CT.
