Martinez, Pendleton Lift CC Over Schreiner

Devin Martinez recorded the first double-double of his career and Edmund Pendleton sank seven of eight free throws during the final 78 seconds as Colorado College rallied for an 86-79 victory over Schreiner University on Sunday afternoon at Reid Arena.

Martinez connected on seven of eight shots from the floor and all nine of his free-throw attempts while posting a season-high 24 points. The freshman forward also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Junior forward CooXooEii Black finished with 16 points and five rebounds for the Tigers, who improved to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Isaac Zachem went 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the second half and hit a pair of clutch free throws with five seconds remaining to help seal the victory. The freshman guard produced season highs with 11 points and five rebounds.

Zachem's long ball from the left wing with 2:36 remaining gave CC a 74-73 lead, and after a missed free throw by the Mountaineers, freshman guard Scott Cunningham buried a triple from the right corner to give the Tigers a four-point with 1:58 to play.

After Schreiner missed a three-pointer and the front end of a one-and-one, Pendleton made three of four free throws to extend Colorado College's lead to seven. The senior guard hit four more during the final 49 seconds to help the Tigers close out the victory.

In addition to his 10 points, Pendleton grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Junior guard Eric Jonas also scored 10 points for CC.

Ellis Jones finished with 21 points for the Mountaineers, who slipped to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Jones connected on three consecutive three-point attempts to help Schreiner build a 12-0 lead during the first 2:17 of the game.

The Tigers clawed their way back to tie the score at 25-25 on Black's layup with 8:48 to play in the first half, but SU answered with a 9-0 run capped by back-to-back baskets by Josh Bashford. The senior guard came off the bench to score 16 points.

The Mountaineers opened a 46-36 lead when Paul Wells notched two of his 13 points a little less than three minutes into the second half, however Colorado College answered with nine consecutive points, the last four from Martinez.

Schreiner opened a seven-point gap when Bashford scored with 12:05 to go, but CC Martinez scored six points during a 14-4 surge that gave the Tigers a 62-59 lead with 7:30 on the clock.

The Mountaineers held a 73-68 lead after Bashford made one of two free throws, but back-to-back three-pointer from Pendleton and Zachem put Colorado College ahead to stay.

The Tigers continue their five-game home stand on Friday, Jan. 4, when they play host to Centenary College at 5:30 p.m.
