GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Women's Cross Country competed in the Augusta Interregional Invite on Saturday, October 19th in Rock Island, Illinois. The women finished in 30th place out of 35 competitive teams.
Coach Joe Sponsel had this to say post meet "The Interregional Invite represented an opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best D3 teams from across the country. An experience that has been few and far between in the history of the Pirates XC Program. It's important to take on these challenges as both teams continue to improve year over year to learn how to travel, prepare, and perform at that high level, myself included. Apart from the meet going well, the trip itself was a lot of fun and a breath of literal fresh air as we got some chillier temps compared to what we've raced in so far this year.
The women's team ABSOLUTELY SMASHED the race this weekend. Not just from running faster, which they all did (either a PR, a season best, and one school record!) but in how they raced as a team. Runners #2-5 were only separated by 10 seconds. In a large meet like this, that is huge for the team standings and for our confidence. If we can stick together, we are empowered to conquer the hard moments with more gusto with the support of that close group. I am super proud of how this team has challenged itself so far this season and how we are improving our mental toughness with each race."
