GEORGETOWN, Texas – Despite the dreary weather the Pirates
shined in their final game of the season, defeating Rhodes College
3-2.
Pirates started the attack early and it paid off in the eighth
minute when senior A.J. Andreola’s shot made Rhodes’
keeper make a diving save but she was unable to reign it in which
allowed Jillian Curran to follow and put the ball in the back of
the net to give SU the quick 1-0 lead.
The rest of the half would be a solid back and forth match with
both teams having some decent looks at the goal, but the score
remained 1-0 Southwestern heading into halftime.
Rhodes had three consecutive corners on the Pirates with 26 minutes
left in the half, but Duncan made a couple of great saves and the
defense locked down to keep the 1-0 SU lead.
In the final 11 minutes of the game, Chelsea Letzer made a great
tackle near midfield and played a through ball to Andreola that
Rhodes’ keeper came out aggressive on and was unable to
corral in, allowing Andreola to win the ball and score on an open
net to put Southwestern up 2-0.
A perilous cross from the Lynx with just under four minutes left in
the match sailed past the goal untouched and out of danger for
Southwestern and the Pirates held on to take the victory in their
final game of the season.
Southwestern ends the season at 10-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the
SCAC. The contest marks the end of the careers for five seniors,
Cheryl Duncan, Laura Kromann, Jennifer Huntsman, Andi Miller and
A.J. Andreola.
