Tigers Top St. Thomas to Win CC Classic

Junior outside hitter Haley Harris posted her first double-double of the season with a match-high 15 kills and 15 digs to help the third-ranked Colorado College volleyball team rally for an 18-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-18 over the University of St. Thomas in what amounted to the championship match of the 2018 CC Classic at Reid Arena.

Harris was one of three Tigers who earned a spot on the all-tournament team in a vote of the opposing coaches. The junior outside hitter was joined by junior setter Lizzy Counts and junior middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling, who also was named MVP.

CC freshman outside hitter Isabella Vasquez posted the first double-double of her career with 14 kills and a team-high 19 digs.

Colorado College received a huge performance from senior middle hitter Myca Steffey-Bean, who pounded down six kills and had a hand in three blocks during the crucial second set.

Steffey-Bean's third kill gave the Tigers what appeared to be a commanding 23-18 lead, but St. Thomas mounted a frantic comeback and took a 24-23 lead on a CC attack error.

With the Tommies serving match point, Counts went to the hot hand and Steffey-Bean delivered to level the score. The Tiger defense denied UST on its next two offensive chances, and the result was two more kills from the Torrance, Calif., product, which tied the match at one set apiece.

Colorado College carried the momentum into the third set and built an early 9-3 lead. After St. Thomas pulled to within three points at 10-7, the Tigers methodically extended its lead and built a 20-13 lead.

In the fourth and final set, the Tommies overcame an early six-point deficit to take a 15-14 lead, but CC answered with an 8-1 surge that put the first come-from-behind victory of the season within reach.

Colorado College closed out the match with kills by Harris, junior opposite hitter Aria Dudley and Spaethling.

While directing the CC attack, Counts produced 46 assists, 14 digs and five blocked shots.

Steffey-Bean assisted on six blocks, while Spaethling added four as the Tigers held St. Thomas to a .072 team hitting percentage.

Senior outside hitter Audrey Erickson came off the bench to lead UST with 10 kills, while junior libero Ellie Meyer recorded a match-high 21 digs for St. Thomas, which finished the weekend with a 3-1 record.

In CC's first match of the day, Steffey-Bean put down 11 kills on 19 swings without an error, recording a stellar .579 hitting percentage as the Tigers defeated East Texas Baptist University 25-15, 25-14, 25-16.

ETBU led 8-5 in the first set, but after head coach Rick Swan burned a timeout, Counts, Steffey-Bean and freshman outside hitter Isabella Vasquez served up a 14-4 run and Colorado College never lost control the rest of the match.

The Tigers carried the momentum into the second set and raced to a 12-3 lead, and then put the match out of reach with a 7-2 run midway through the third set that gave Colorado College a 20-13 lead.

Vasquez produced eight kills and was one of three players to share the match high of 13 digs.

Sophomore libero Rachel Krutz also had 13 digs and set a single-match high of five service aces.

Junior outside hitter Sydney Lopez led the ETBU attack with seven kills, while freshman libero Julia De Los Santos posted 13 digs.

East Texas Baptist finished the tournament with a 1-3 record.

Also earning a spot on the all-tournament team were Grace Bordson (St. Thomas), Carley Boswell (East Texas Baptist University), Kaitlyn Boelter-Eberhardt (North Central College), Kierra Harder (Nebraska Wesleyan University), Cassidy Plooster (Nebraska Wesleyan University) and Julia Spacek (St. Thomas).

Colorado College will play host to its second tournament of the regular season next weekend when George Fox University, Pacific University, Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Minnesota Morris visit Reid Arena for the 2018 Spike It Up Classic on Friday and Saturday.
