
DENVER – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas picked up their first win of the 2019 season Friday with a 2-0 shutout at Johnson & Wales (Colo.)
After a scoreless first half, Katarina Maksimov (SR/Richmond, Texas) opened the scoring with a 66th-minute strike off a pass from Aeriana Lewis (SO/Houston, Texas). The goal added to Maksimov's school-record career lead in goals; Friday's goal was the 26th of her career.
The Celts got some breathing room in the 80th minute when freshman Rachel Bejarano (FR/Santa Fe, Texas) scored an unassisted goal, the first of her collegiate career.
The snapped a four-match winless streak for the Celts, who improved to 1-3-1 for the season. Johnson & Wales fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Olivia Futch (SO/Katy, Texas) notched two saves in goal for the Celts during the first half. Jordan Thompson (SR/Spring, Texas) played the second half and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
The Celts return to action Friday, Sept. 20, when they host Centenary College (La.) as part of a women's-and-men's doubleheader between the two schools. Kickoff for the women's match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
