Pirates Bring Home A 3rd Place Finish

11/4/2024 3:45:00 PM

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Men's Cross Country competed in the SCAC Championship in Shreveport, Louisiana on Saturday, November 2nd. The Pirates secured a third place finish out of 10 teams!

Coach Joe Sponsel said this post meet "The guys really put it all together this weekend. Everything we've been working on this season so far. We just adjusted our plan a little bit for this specific meet and applied the same skills they've been sharpening and they rose to the occasion. We were composed at the start and early mile or two of the race, and then started moving up in the middle miles so we could be fighting for really important points in the last mile. The guys did a great job of winning their individual battles at the end and earned our best finish in a long time. We were 4th out of 7 last year with 102 points and this year we were 3rd out of 10 with 83. So less points and higher place with 3 more teams, that shows the progress we've made. I'm super proud of them and we get to do it again in a couple weeks at the Regional Meet.

I must give a special shout out to Brian Armijo who was All-SCAC and the Elite 19 award winner which recognizes high academic achievement in addition to high athletic performance. Brian gets it done in the classroom with his challenging list of classes for his double major and has been the picture of consistency in training and in races for the team this year. He's a really special Pirate."
