Tiger Cross Country Teams Finish Second Among D-I Competition

SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity men's and women's cross country teams both finished second among non-Division III teams at the University of the Incarnate Word Invitational on Saturday morning at the Windcrest Golf Course.

The Tiger men finished behind hosting UIW, while the women trailed only Rice University in the meet. Trinity defeated Texas State University, UTSA, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and others on its way to second in both races.

Will Salony (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) was the top finisher for the Tigers, coming in seventh in a time of 25:05.5 that is the third fastest of his career. Teammate Diego Flores (San Antonio, Texas / Great Hearts Monte Vista North) was less than a second behind him in ninth place, moving up to third in Trinity cross country history with a time of 25:06.2. Ben Whittemore (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown) also had his third-best time ever to finish 21st in 25:45.8 on Saturday. The three Tiger runners now hold the three fastest times in school history.

On the women's side, Allison Fortman (McKinney, Texas / Boyd) led the way with a 14th-place finish in her Tiger debut, finishing with a time of 22:39.2 that moves her to 16th in school history. Just over three seconds behind Fortman was Madison Habeck (Lake Jackson, Texas / Clute Brazoswood) in 15th place. Habeck moved up to 18th in school history with her time of 22:42.7 on Saturday.

The Tiger men had three other runners move into the top 25 in school history after their performances at this morning's meet. Nathaniel Trevino (San Antonio, Texas / Central Catholic) was 25th individually with a tie of 25:58.3 that moves him into 16th all-time among Tiger runners. Joseph Herlin (Ft. Worth, Texas / Boswell) and Logan Nasky (Irving, Texas / MacArthur) are now 23rd and 24th in school history after today's races. Herlin crossed the line in 26:15.8 to break his previous personal-best time by nearly 45 seconds, while Nasky was less than two seconds behind his teammate in 26:17.5.

Josette Gurule (Santa Fe, N.M. / Academy for Technology and the Classics) was third among the Trinity women and 22nd overall as an individual today, finishing in 23:12.3 to move up to 26th in school history. Ellie Catron (Spring, Texas / The Woodlands Christian) was just outside the top 25 with her time of 23:19.1, while Em Miller (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) (29th, 23:27.1) and Cali Good (Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa) (31st, 23:32.7) gave the Tigers six runners in the top 31 of the meet.

"I'm really proud of both teams today," said Head Coach Emily Daum. "They ran smart races in especially humid conditions and beat out some great D-I competition. We're anxious to get back to work as we prepare for an exciting season."

Trinity will host a men's and women's dual meet with Texas Lutheran University on Friday morning (September 22) at Olmos Basin Park. The Tigers will also compete at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, September 30.
