SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2024 season at the University of the Incarnate Word Twilight, held at the Classics Elite Soccer Fields on Friday night.
Each Tiger team had three runners finish in the top 30 against mainly Division I and Division II teams, with the men finishing fourth and the women coming in sixth.
The men's team was led by
Will Salony (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) and
Diego Flores (San Antonio, Texas / Great Hearts Monte Vista North), who both posted new personal records in the 6K race. Salony was seventh individually with a time of 18:21.2, while Flores crossed the line in 18:46.0 to finish 18th.
Logan Nasky (Irving, Texas / MacArthur) was 28th with his time of 18:53.2.
For the women,
Josette Gurule (Santa Fe, N.M. / Academy for Technology and the Classics) led the way with a 16th-place finish time of 14:41.6 in the 4K event.
Gianna Keena (Lakeway, Texas / Lake Travis) finished in 14:47.3 to snag 21st place individually, while first-year
Charlotte Martin (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) made her Tiger debut with a time of 14.49.0 that was also good for a spot in the top 25.
Overall, the women's team saw significant improvement over last year's times, dropping the team average by more than 20 seconds. The next four Trinity women to finish were bunched up inside the top 40 individually.
Cali Good (Yucaipa, Calif. / Yucaipa) was 31st (15:04.7), then
Krista Wolfhope (Austin, Texas / Vista Ridge) and first-year
Emerson Voldan (Arlington, Texas / Mansfield Summit) were 33rd and 34th in respective times of 15:06.5 and 15:06.8.
Emily Gnecco (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) was 37th in a time of 15:14.2 on Friday.
Ryan Tresaugue (Spring, Texas / The Woodlands) finished 48th with a time of 19:39.6 for the Tiger men, followed by three more teammates that finished less than four seconds apart.
Nathaniel Trevino (San Antonio, Texas / Central Catholic) turned in a time of 19:49.8, followed by first-years
Nico Lopez (Buda, Texas / Johnson) and
Kyle Fix (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) in 15:52.1 and 19:52.9.
Both Trinity teams will be off next week, but will be back in action at another UIW event on Friday, September 13. The UIW Invitational, held at the Windcrest Golf Course, will begin with the men's race at 8:00 a.m.
