
Gents Fall 75-59 At Schreiner On Friday
The Centenary men's basketball team lost 75-59 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday night inside Stephens Family Arena.
Kerrville, Texas – The Centenary men's basketball team lost 75-59 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday night inside Stephens Family Arena.
The Gents (6-12, 4-5 SCAC) lost their fourth game in a row and dropped to 1-5 on the road this season. The Mountaineers (13-5, 6-3 SCAC) improved to 5-2 at home and won their second game in a row.
Schreiner led Centenary 34-28 at halftime and then outscored the Gents 41-31 in the second half. Centenary struggled offensively, shooting a season-low 28.4 % (19-67) from the floor, finished 6-32 from beyond the arc for 18.8 %) and went 15-22 (68.2 %) from the free-throw line. The Mountaineers shot the ball well, finishing 46.9 % (30-64) from the floor and were 6-18 (33.3 %) from the 3-point line and 9-15 at the FT line for 60 %.
The Mountaineers dominated in points in the paint (48-24) and won the rebounding battle, 49-35. Centenary turned the ball over 13 times which Schreiner scored 17 points off of while the Mountaineers committed 19 turnovers which the Gents turned into 23 points. Schreiner finished with a 14-8 advantage in fast break points, 20-18 in second-chance points, and edged Centenary 11-10 in bench points. Centenary finished with nine steals and seven assists while Schreiner tallied 13 assists, six steals, and three blocked shots.
Junior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) led the Gents with 17 points and was joined in double figures by senior F Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas) with 14 points and senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) with 10.
Senior G Jalen Ned (New Orleans, La.) added seven and freshman G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) and senior G Kyron Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) each scored four. Freshman G Sirwilliam McDuffie (Houston, Texas) scored two and freshman G Trenton Thomas (Cedar Hill, Texas) had one.
Beverly finished 6-24 from the floor, 3-16 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 at the FT line in 38 minutes as he reached double figures for the ninth time this season. He added seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Greenleaf notched his 13th double-digit scoring performance of the season as he was 5-11 from the floor and 4-7 from the FT line with a pair of steals in 33 minutes with a team-best 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season.
Collier recorded his 13th double-digit game of the season as he finished 3-15 from the floor, 2-8 from beyond the arc, and 2-5 at the FT line in 32 minutes with three assists, three rebounds, and one steal. Ned was 1-6 from the floor with a trey and was 4-4 at the FT line in 27 minutes and added two rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Thomas went 1-2 at the FT line in 20 minutes with two rebounds and one assist.
Addison came off the bench and was 1-2 from the floor and 2-2 at the FT line in 23 minutes with eight rebounds and a steal, McDuffie played four minutes and was 1-2 from the floor, and Powell played 21 minutes and was 2-3 from the floor with two rebounds and a pair of steals.
Kamden Ross led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds for his 10th double-double. He played 32 minutes and was 11-17 from the floor and 4-7 at the FT line with an assist, a blocked shot, and a steal. Beau Cervantes scored 16 in 30 minutes with five assists, three steals, and a rebound as he was 4-9 from the floor, 5-6 at the FT line, and 3-8 from beyond the arc. Craig Ward added 12 points in 22 minutes with five rebounds and a blocked shot as he was 6-6 from the floor. Five Mountaineers combined to score the remaining 21 points.
Schreiner jumped out to an 18-9 lead on a trey by Dylan Snow at the 14:25 mark but an 8-0 run by the Gents capped off by a Collier layup made it 18-17 with 9:26 remaining before halftime. But, Schreiner outscored Centenary 16-11 the remaining nine+ minutes to take a 34-28 lead at the break.
The Mountaineers scored the first six points of the second half to lead 40-28 at the 17:39 mark after a Ross layup. Schreiner's lead grew to 47-30 at the 15:04 mark after a tip-in by Ross to punctuate a 13-2 run to start the second half. The Mountaineers led 55-36 with 10:45 left and prompted a timeout to be called by the Gents. Centenary responded by scoring the next five points, but an 11-1 Schreiner run capped by a trey by Cervantes made it 66-42 with just 6:17 left in the game. The Gents finished the game on a 17-9 run but it was not enough to overcome the large deficit.
Centenary will have a quick turnaround as the Gents head to San Antonio on Saturday as they face Trinity University at 6 p.m.
