James Settles finished second individually with a school record time and led the Colorado College men's cross country to a seventh-place finish among 43 Division III teams Saturday at the prestigious Augustana Invitational in Rock Island, Ill.

Settles, who finished 60
th at this meet last season, covered the 8K race in 24 minutes, 20.8 seconds, nine seconds faster than the previous school record of 24:29, set by Scott Kang in 1986.

The Tigers, unranked in the most recent Division III national poll, finished ahead of six ranked teams, U. of Chicago (18), UC Santa Cruz (21), Wisconsin-Stevens Point (35), LaVerne (28), Trinity University (34) and Central College (26).

No. 1 North Central College won the meet with 60 points, followed by No. 4 Wisconsin-Whitewater (90 points), No. 7 Wartburg (97), No. 25 Washington University (210), No. 19 Calvin (230) and Carleton (254).

"I was really happy with how the race shaped up for the team," head coach
Alex Nichols said. "We came to Augustana to prove that we have a national caliber squad. The men absolutely delivered and gained some valuable experience from this competitive field."

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the SCAC Championship Meet in Seguin, Texas.
