GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates' softball team continued their rough streak by dropping a pair of game to ASC opponent Mary Hardin-Baylor. SU fell in game one 5-2 and then again in game two 4-1.
Game 1: SU 2, UMHB 5
Southwestern was first on the board in the bottom of the first
inning when Haley Hughes singled to right field to bring senior
Katelyn Gola around from second base.
In the bottom of the second the Pirates threatened again and
loaded the bases when Taylor Blair had a perfectly executed bunt
single to bring up Amanda Ambrose with no outs. Ambrose flew out to
shallow left, but Blair Wallace followed with a slow roller to
second base that allowed pinch runner Abigail O’Connor to
score, pushing the Pirate lead to two, 2-0.
The Crusaders started to string things together as they loaded the
bases with no outs in the top of the fourth. Greeson’s
infield grounder was misplayed which allowed UMHB to score two to
tie the game. A long foul fly ball by Courtney Johnston was caught
by Wallace and was deep enough to allow another UMHB run across the
plate giving the Crusaders the 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Southwestern seemed poised to score after Hughes reached second on
a pop fly collision in right field and Pavlicek’s sacrifice
bunt moved her to third with one out. Aly Pulver’s grounder
to second base was fielded cleanly and thrown home to get Hughes
for the second out of the inning and end SU’s threat to
tie.
UMHB pushed two more across in the top of the seventh, pushing
their lead to three and Southwestern was unable to score in the
bottom of the inning to lose game one 5-2.
Abby Schumacher was 2-2 after stepping in at second base. Lyndsy
Maus had a strong day of relief in the middle innings, pitching
three innings and allowing just one hit and one run despite
receiving the loss.
Game 2: SU 1, UMHB 4
In game two Southwestern and UMHB were deadlocked through four
innings until UMHB snagged the lead by posting four runs in the top
of the fifth on an error, double and back to back homeruns over the
leftfield fence.
The Pirates put one run up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the
sixth on a two out double by Aly Pulver to bring SU within three,
4-1 with one inning to play.
After retiring the side in the top of the inning SU loaded the
bases with two outs but Hughes’ shot was right at the center
fielder to end the game.
Three Pirates, Pavlicek, Pulver and Blair had multi-hit games with
each going 2-3 from the plate in game two.
Southwestern now sits at 4-4 on the year and remain at home on
Tuesday to play host to Texas Lutheran for a double header
beginning at 1:00 pm.
