MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Millsaps College senior linebacker Will Hawkins highlighted the SCAC's seven selections to the 2010 D3football.com All-Region teams, the website announced this afternoon. Hawkins was the lone first-team selection from the SCAC.
Hawkins, the 2010 SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year, led the SCAC in tackles for the second consecutive season. His 117 tackles this season are the ninth-most for a single season in league history and his 84 solo tackles are the third-most. Hawkins registered double-digit tackles totals in eight of 10 games this year, including a career-high 21 against DePauw on Oct. 21.
DePauw's Alex Koors, the 2010 SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year, was named to the All-South second-team. He caught 86 passes for for 1,255 yards and 16 touchdowns to lead all SCAC receivers. He caught a touchdown pass in 10 of the Tigers' 11 games and tallied 100+ receiving yards in six games. Koors finished his career as the SCAC all-time leader in receiving yards (3,850), total receptions (255), yards receiving per game (96.25), and receiving touchdowns (42). He is also the first receiver in league history to be named Offensive Player-of-the-Year twice (2009 & 2010).
Millsaps junior running back Shane Bowser was named to the All-South third-team. Bowser was named first-team All-SCAC after rushing for a career-high 1,088 yards and 12 touchdowns. He ran for 100 or more yards in seven of 10 games, including a career-high 204 yards Nov. 13 at Birmingham-Southern. Bowser scored a touchdown in all but three games this season while averaging 5.6 yards per carry.
Bowser's teammate, senior wide receiver/kick returner Michale Galatas was honored as a third-team All-South selection. He was the 2010 SCAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Year after tallying 1,260 all-purpose yards. He became just the second player in league history to earn three straight SCAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Year Awards (Centre's Brian Britt from 1999-2001). Galatas finished his career as the school's all-time leader in kick return yards (1,670) and second all-time in all-purpose yards (4,242). He also played in the 2010 Division III Football Senior Classic this past weekend in Salem, Va.
DePauw junior offensive lineman Lewis Brown was an All-South third-team selection. He was earned All-SCAC first-team laurels in 2010. Brown helped the Tigers to their second straight SCAC chamionship and second consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. He anchored an offensive line that helped DePauw to finish first in the league in passing offense (292.9 yards/game) and second in the league in total offense (388.7 yards/game).
Centre junior offensive lineman Ben Hume also earned third-team All-South honors. He was a first-team All-SCAC honoree after helping the Colonels finish second in the league in scoring offense (34.2 points/game), third in the SCAC in passing offense (213 yards/game) and third in total offense (384.6 yards/game).
Sewanee junior defensive back Alfonza Knight was an All-South third-team selection. Knight earned All-SCAC first-team laurels in 2010 after recording 101 tackles (68 solo) to go along with four forced fumbles, three pass break ups, two interceptions and one sack.
