Schreiner Earns First-Ever SCAC Volleyball Tournament Win; Defeats Dallas 3-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Schreiner University Mountaineers finished off their first day of action at the SCAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 win over the University of Dallas on Friday night. Interactive Bracket | Official Website | Photo Gallery | Schreiner University Postgame Interview

The match was the final one of the opening day at Trinity University, and was tied 1-1 after the first two sets. Schreiner won the opener 25-19, then Dallas evened the match with its own 25-19 win. The Mountaineers then edged Dallas 25-23 in the third, carrying the momentum to a 25-19 win in the fourth.

Jaemi Groves (43 assists) and Jamie Burns (30 digs) led Schreiner to the victory, while Callie Du Perier sported a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Veronica Castillo and Victoria Rogers finished with 10 kills each, while Alyssa Chapman nabbed 13 for the Mountaineers. Rogers also had seven blocks.

C.J. Broadbent paced Dallas with 35 assists and 12 digs, while Jessie Koster finished with a team-best 22 digs. Cat Dowgwillo (13) and Emily Caples (11) were the only Crusader players to reach double figures in kills. Dowgwillo and Christine Jablonsky recorded five blocks each, and Broadbent also had three aces.

Schreiner advances to the Fifth/Sixth Match against Austin College at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, while Dallas takes on Centenary at 11:00 a.m. to start the final day’s action.
