SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Trinity University clinched its first SCAC Volleyball Championship since 2008 with an historic 3-2 comeback victory over Southwestern University on Saturday night. The Tigers lost the first two sets 25-17 and 25-20, but rallied with three straight wins (25-19, 25-22, and 15-11) to become just the fourth team in SCAC Tournament history – among more than 250 matches – to win after falling behind 0-2. The win was also the 800th in the career for Trinity Head Coach Julie Jenkins.
The match also featured an electric atmosphere with an estimated 800 fans in attendance at the SCAC Championship event.
Four different players posted double-doubles to lead the way for Trinity, led by SCAC Tournament MVP Layne Hubbard. Hubbard had a match-best 18 kills to go with 26 digs. Fellow All-Tournament honorees Maggie Emodi (15 kills, 31 digs) and Maryn Swierc (31 assists, 13 digs) also scored double-doubles. Erika Edrington also had 19 assists and 12 digs. Shannon Courtney led all players with 32 digs in the match.
All-Tournament honoree Kaitlyn Foster led Southwestern with 15 kills and 27 digs to post a double-double of her own for the Pirates. Macey Pool finished with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Nikki Welch scored 42 assists and 15 digs. Chandler Lentz (25), Andie Alford (14), and Kaitlyn Corbett (10) all reached double figures in digs as well. Abbie Robb finished with 10 kills, while Olivia Drummond earned herself a spot on the All-Tournament Team with 12 kills and five blocks in the SCAC final.
Also earning All-Tournament honors for the weekend event were Texas Lutheran’s Megan Lee, and Courtney Birkett of Colorado College. Colorado defeated Texas Lutheran earlier in the day to earn third place in the tournament.
With the win, Trinity earns the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs. Bids for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday, November 11.
