Katie Garrett, Trinity University, Women's Soccer

KATIE GARRETT OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior goalkeeper on the second-ranked women's soccer team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending September 30, 2012.

Garrett, a native of Burleson, Texas, has started every game this season in goal for the Tigers, piling up nearly 600 minutes of action. She has posted a 0.31 goals-against average (GAA), recording seven saves, and allowing just two goals in nine games.

In her career, Garrett is just one of six Trinity players to record at least 100 saves, and coming into the season, she holds the third-best GAA in school history. She is a two-time SCAC Player of the Week, who was named Second Team All-SCAC in 2010, and Third Team All-Region (NSCAA) in 2011.

In addition to her work on the field, Garrett is a three-time member of the SCAC Honor Roll who has participated in countless service projects while at Trinity. She has worked with the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, and St. PJ’s Children’s Home. Garrett has helped raise funds for Girls’ Inc., has worked with Top Soccer – a soccer camp for handicapped children, and has volunteered at Haven for Hope (a homeless shelter). 

Garrett serves as the SAAC Community Service Chair, and last fall helped organize a Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser that generated $20,000. Garrett and the SAAC are currently working on a similar fundraiser for the fall of 2012. 

As part of her Introduction to Global Health class at Trinity, Garrett and two other students collaborated on a project to help alleviate the transmission of disease by mosquitoes in Brazil. The students were invited to present their solution at the fifth annual Clinton Global Initiative University Symposium in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. The project presented by the students offered a solution for controlling dengue fever through tire recycling, impacting both disease control and the environment.
