SUWANEE, Ga. - Over a decade has passed since
she ended her conference career with an individual performance
that has not been witnessed since and will likely never be
duplicated. And yet, her name still echos from the same stadium
public address system that continually called her name so many
times on that late April weekend in 2000.
The Rhodes College PA announcer, when recognizing the winner of the
1,500 meters at the 2011 SCAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Championships, reminds the crowd that the record holder in this
event remains "the legendary Heather Stone of Sewanee."
Eleven years earlier, at the same Rhodes College
venue, Sewanee senior Heather Stone set that 1,500 meters
record (along with four other records) and in the
process became the
league's only back-to-back-to-back Female
Athlete-of-the-Year honoree. She posted the top individual
point total in the history of the conference meet (men's or
women's) when she won six events and totaled an incredible 62.5
points - outscoring five teams by herself - at the 2000 SCAC
Women's Track & Field Championships.
Stone's legendary performance at the 2000 SCAC Track & Field
Championships is being recognized as the Top Moment in the history
of SCAC women's outdoor track & field. Top 20
Moments homepage
Stone posted individual victories in the 400 meters, 800 meters,
1,500 meters, 3,000 meters, 10,000 meters and 400 meter hurdles.
With the exception of her finishing time in the 400 meters, each
victory established a new SCAC championship meet record for that
particular event. Her 2000 championship meet times in the 1,500 and
*3,000 meters remain conference records. (Note: *The 3,000 meters is no
longer an event at the SCAC women's championships.)
Stone's performance at the 2000 SCAC Championships earned her a
third consecutive Female Athlete-of-the-Year honor and she finished
her career with a record 14 individual titles at SCAC championship
meet competition.
After posting a win in the 1,500 meters at the 2000 NCAA
Indoor Track & Field Championships, Stone completed the
Indoor/Outdoor sweep with a victory in the event at the
2000 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Championships held at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. At
that same event, Stone placed second in the 800 meters and seventh
in the 3,000 meters to earn all-American honors in all three
events.
Russell Kramer, the SCAC Director of Communications/New Media, had
a chance to catch up with the former Tiger all-American, Heather
Stone Williams, to relive that amazing weekend in 2000 and to
also reflect on her career while at Sewanee. To listen to that
