JONATHAN PINQUE OF CENTRE COLLEGE, a sophomore from Athens, Ala., who is a running back on the Colonels' football team, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending October 11, 2009.
Pinque, who currently leads the SCAC in rushing
with a 119.6 yards per game average, was a First Team All-SCAC
selection as a freshman in 2008.
In addition to being a big part of the Centre College football
team, Pinque also volunteers in the Big
Brother/Big Sister program in Boyle County. The sophomore mentors
and meet regularly with a young student as part of that program and
has also volunteered and assisted excessively with the massive
clean-up of Danville and Centre following last year's winter storm
that devastated the area.
Pinque is an active member of the Phi Delta Phi
fraternity and was a winner of The Robert Dale Holmes Memorial
Prize, awarded to a first-year class member who, by the improvement
of his or her work, diligence, and character, reveals most clearly
the value of college training and the spirit of the College.
Before arriving on Centre's campus, Pinque was
awarded the National Carnegie Award for heroism in 2006
after saving two teenagers from drowning in a submerged
car.
"We are very proud of Jonathan," Centre head football coach Andy
Frye said. "His commitment to service and helping others has had a
definite impact for the greater good on our campus and in our
community."
