SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head
coaches of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Colorado
College's Ted Castaneda was named SCAC Men's Cross
Country Coach-of-the-Year and Rhodes College’s Robert
Shankman was selected SCAC Women's Cross Country
Coach-of-the-Year.
Colorado College won its third SCAC men's cross country title
in four years - led by 2010 Men's Runner-of-the-Year Jackson
Brainerd, who won the individual title with a 25:09.60 finish.
Brainerd's teammates Andrew Wagner (25:35.90), Daniel Kraft
(26:09.70), Mike Dougan (26:11.30) and Max Gerken (26:17.90) also
posted top-20 times by finishing third, 16th, 17th and 20th,
respectively. The CC Tigers finished with 57 points
- 15 points ahead of DePauw University. Individual

Two weeks later, Colorado College posted a fourth-place team
finish at the NCAA West Regional and earned an at-large berth
to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. Brainerd
defended his regional championship and became the first two-time
regional champion in school history. At the national meet, the CC
Tigers took 30th place out of 32 teams.
This marks the third time Castaneda has been selected as SCAC
Men's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year.
Centre's John Kieffer earned Newcomer-of-the-Year honors
by virtue of being the top finisher among first-year runners at the
conference championship meet. His time of 26:09.40 was good
for 15th-place, just missing out on all-SCAC honors.
On the women's side, 29th-ranked Rhodes College won its first SCAC
cross country championship and first since 2002. The Lynx women
totaled a championship record low 18 points to defeat
second-place DePauw University by 44 points. Individual

For Shankman, this marks the seventh time he has been named SCAC
Women's Cross Country Coach-of-the-Year and the 16th time overall.
He has also earned the Men's COTY award nine times.
Pacing the Rhodes women at the conference championship meet was
junior Taylor Stephens, who covered the 6-kilometer course in
22:22.10 to win the individual race and earn 2010 SCAC Cross
Country Runner-of-the-Year honors. Rhodes placed five runners (Anna
Johnson – third), (Kelsey Dudziak – fourth), (Sandy
Henin – fifth) and (Caroline Webster – sixth) in the
top six. Maddie Harrigan (eighth) rounded out the Lynx who earned
All-SCAC honors.
Trinity’s Rosemary Steup, who finished five seconds behind
Stephens, earned SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors as the top
first-year finisher.
Two weeks later, the Rhodes women won the South/Southeast Region
championship meet on their home course and earned an automatic
berth to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. Led by
Stephens’ 45th-place individual finish, Rhodes placed 31st
out of 32 teams in the team competition.
