Greencastle, Ind. — Megan Soultz allowed just a sixth inning single to Lisa Wiesman and led second-seed and 15th-ranked DePauw to a 2-0 win over sixth-seed Thomas More in a winner's bracket game in the first round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. Box Score
DePauw will play again on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the winner
of today's Defiance-Thomas More game. The Saints face Hiram in
today's 4 p.m. elimination game. The Tigers improved to 30-7, while
the Saints dropped to 35-10.
Soultz retired the first 15 batters she faced before Weisman's
sixth-inning leadoff single and recorded her 12th shutout of the
year. She also extended her streak of consecutive innings without
allowing an earned run to 59 2/3 innings.
The Tigers started the scoring in the fourth as Rachel Gill led
off with a double to left and advanced to third on Jen Kosinski's
sacrifice bunt. Ashlee Anton's sacrifice fly plated Gill and gave
DePauw a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Rachel MacBeth singled down the left field line and
moved to second on Chelsy Patterson's sacrifice bunt. She moved to
third on Emma Minx's grounder and scored on Gill's single to right
center.
Brianne Weeks led DePauw with three of their nine hits, while Gill
and MacBeth had two each.
Soultz improved to 27-7 with the win, while Dana Bors dropped to
16-2.
