  • Patrick Johnston Tapped to Lead Sewanee Women's Soccer

    SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Former All-American and All-ACC player Patrick Johnston has been named the next head coach for Sewanee's women's soccer program, according to Mark Webb, athletic director for Sewanee. Johnston has previous experience on the Mountain as the goalkeeper coach for the 2008 Tigers, who had a 10-win season.

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Joe Vari was named the Women's Soccer Coach and Assistant Coordinator of Recreational Services at Rhodes College today. Vari served as the men's and women's assistant coach this past season at Rhodes. Vari was instrumental in helping the women's team to their first SCAC Championship since 1991 and the team's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships.

    SUWANEE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) named a record 776 student-athletes to the 2008 SCAC Fall Academic Honor Roll on Tuesday. This year's total eclipsed last year's previous record of 715 student-athletes. Since its inception in the fall of 1997, over 13,700 student-athletes have achieved recognition for their contributions in the classroom.

In exclusive balloting by the head coaches of the conference, Diana Buss of Rhodes College, Evey Gannaway of Sewanee-University of the South and Allison Terry of Centre split the vote to share 2008 SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year. Katy Joyner of Rhodes was voted the league’s Defensive Player-of-the-Year.

With the win, Sewanee has now moved into the Region (South) Rankings for the second time this year at number ten. Sewanee is one of four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference teams that is now regionally ranked.

Southwestern University who stepped out of conference this weekend defeated Hardin-Simmons (Texas) University and entered in the South Region Rankings at #10 for the first time this season. The Southern Colligate Athletic Conference now has three regionally ranked teams again for the first time since September of this year.

    SUWANEE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting year in women's soccer. Last year Trinity University won its second straight SCAC title and seventh since 2000. The Tigers advanced to post-season play as the lone representative of the SCAC losing in the first round to Hardin-Simmons University. One of the strongest women's soccer conferences in the nation, it was the first time since 2004 that the SCAC has had less than two teams enter post-season play in the NCAA Tournament. With a bevy of talent returning the conference looks to play a major role in the national championship picture once again.
